  1. Characteristics of living things Francisci

  2. Characteristics of living things Unicellular – organisms that are made up of only one cell. Examples: 1. Bacteria (prokaryotes – an organism that lacks a nucleus) 2. Some protists and fungi (eukaryotes – an organism that has a nucleus)

  3. Unicellular organisms

  4. Characteristics of Living Things Multicellular – Organisms composed of many cells that are specialized to do certain tasks. Examples: Plants, animals, most fungi and some protists (eukaryotes – organisms whose cells have a nucleus)

  5. Characteristics of Living Things Growth & Development: Growing is the process of becoming larger; development is the process of change that occurs during an organism’s life to produce a more complex organism.

  6. Characteristics of Living Things Energy use: The cells of organisms use energy to do what living things must do, such as repairing injured parts. Cellular Respiration: Process organisms use to get energy from their food (takes place in the mitochondria). Organisms use glucose – a sugar molecule – to make ATP. ATP is used to fuel everything the organism does.

  7. Characteristics of Living Things • Plants take in carbon dioxide and transpire oxygen. • Mammals/Humans take in oxygen and give off carbon dioxide.

  8. Characteristics of Living Things (Energy Use Continued) Plant cells use photosynthesis to produce energy. Photosynthesis – The process in which some organisms use water along with sunlight and carbondioxide to make their own food

  9. Characteristics of Living Things Reproduction: Ability to produce offspring that are similar to the parents (may involve mitosis or meiosis).

  10. Characteristics of Living Things Digestion and Removal of Wastes To produce energy through cellular respiration, organisms need food and water. Digestion is the process by which organisms break down food into smaller molecules. When organisms take in nutrients, they produce wastes. These wastes must be removed from the cell through the cell membrane.

  11. Characteristics of Living Things Response to Stimuli Irritability is the process living things use to respond to stimuli. A stimulus (plural: stimuli) is a change in the environment that causes an organism to react. Examples: Changes in light, temperature or sound, exhaustion or thirst, a sunflower turning its buds to face the sun.
