  2. Overview of the Apostle’s Creed Creed = Belief (a statement of faith)

Last week: I Believe in God the Father, almighty, maker of heaven and earth • Father • Father = Of Jesus (John 5) • Father = Of us in Christ by adoption and regeneration (John 1 and 3) • Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth • Almighty = Having the power of being in and of Himself (Romans 1) • Maker = Creator of everything (Romans 1)

This week: I believe in Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son, our Lord. • Two creeds found in the Bible: • 1 Corinthians 15 – The facts of the gospel are true! • Philippians 2 – The facts of the gospel are glorious! • Two historical creeds: • The Apostles’ Creed (unofficial/older/shorter, written by the church in the west before 200 AD) • The Nicene Creed (official, accepted at worldwide church councils in 325 AD and 381 AD)

  5. The Apostle’s Creed: • I believe in God the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.

The Apostle’s Creed: • And [I believe] in Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son, our Lord. • Who was conceived by the Holy [Spirit], born of the Virgin Mary. • Suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead and buried: He descended into [Hades]. • The third day He rose again from the dead. • He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. • From [where] He shall come to judge the [living] and the dead.

  7. The Apostle’s Creed: • I believe in the Holy [Spirit]. • I believe in the holy [Christian] church: the communion of saints. • The forgiveness of sins. • The resurrection of the body. • And the life everlasting. Amen.

The facts of the gospel really are true!1 Corinthians 15:1-3a (NIV84) 1 Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2 By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. 3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance… • Even liberal scholars date 1 Corinthians very early, maybe Paul’s first letter in 40 AD. • Helps us define: “I believe in…” • Corinthians = Received, took their stand on, were saved by, held firmly to, and believed the gospel (those are all synonyms for “believe”).

The facts of the gospel really are true!1 Corinthians 15:3b-82 (NIV84) 3 …that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. 6 After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, 8 and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born. • Facts: Jesus died, was buried, and rose again. • Evidence: Past: OT prophets, Present: NT witnesses • Application: Jesus did this for our sins.

The facts of the gospel are gloriously true!Philippians 2:5-8 (NIV84) 5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death— even death on a cross! • Jesus came from: Heaven, to Earth, to Under the Earth.

Philippians 2:9-11 (NIV84) 9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. • Under the earth – (raised back to Earth) – ascended back to Heaven • Application: • Worship Jesus for His humility • Imitate Jesus’ humility

  14. 2. Pre-existence (Deity) Apostles Creed: And [I believe] in Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son, our Lord. Nicene Creed: And [I believe] in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds; God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God; begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made.

  15. 2.a. I believe in… Believe = have faith, trust in, or know Three Levels of knowing: 1. Knowledge (Factual) hearing the facts of the gospel 2. Ascent (Critical) Agreeing that the facts of the gospel are true in principle 3. Faith (Relational) Accepting that you need the gospel, calling on God to save you in Jesus

  16. 2.b.Jesus Christ • Jesus (Greek) • Joshua (Hebrew) • Savior (English) • Christ (Greek) • Messiah (Hebrew) • Anointed One/Coming King (English) • Rightful king of Israel in the line of David/Rightful King of the universe as God (Psalm 110)

  17. 2.c. His only begotten Son • Begotten: Son of God • In Time = Incarnation (John 1:14) • In Eternity = Eternal Generation (John 3:16) • Pre-existence: Jesus was always God’s Son and was always God.

  18. 2.d.Our Lord • Yahweh/Jehovah (Hebrew) • Kyrios (Greek) – used in the Septuagint • LORD (English) Three definitions of “Lord” (C.S. Lewis) • Sir/Mr. = polite title for a respectable man • Master/Lord = the one we serve as servants/slaves • YHWH/JHVH = LORD = I AM = The one true God who: Is, Was, and always will Be.

  19. 3. Incarnation (Humanity) Apostles Creed: Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost [or Holy Spirit], born of the Virgin Mary. Nicene Creed: Who, for us men for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man. • Incarnation = Jesus was pre-existent, but was made man by the Holy Spirit. • Virgin Birth = Jesus didn’t have an earthly Father. • Divine and Human = Jesus become the God-Man, not just as a miracle, but in order to save us.

  20. 4. Death (Atoning Sacrifice) Apostles Creed: Suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead and buried: He descended into Hell [or Hades or Death]. Nicene Creed: And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was buried. • Historical = Jesus was a real man who really lived at the time of Pontius Pilate. • Suffered and Died = Jesus suffered a horrible punishment, and He died at the end of it. • In the Apostles Creed we affirm that Jesus really was dead in all that normally means.

  21. Where did Jesus go while He was dead: Hell? Hades? Death? • Luke 16:19-31 = Sheol (the place of the dead) is divided into a good and bad side which you can talk across, but can’t cross. • Luke 23:43 = Jesus tells the thief on the cross He will be with him today in Paradise (the good side of the place of the dead). • Acts 2:31 = Jesus wasn’t abandoned to Hades and His body didn’t rot in the grave.

  22. Where did Jesus go while He was dead: Hell? Hades? Death? • 1 Peter 3:18-20, 4:6 = Jesus may have been speaking to people in Sheol while He was dead. • Ephesians 4:8-10 = When Jesus ascended back to heaven He plundered death’s captives. • 2 Corinthians 12:4 = Paul says that Paradise is in heaven now with God. • Revelation 20:14 = When Jesus returns, death and Hades will be thrown into Hell. • Revelation 21:1-4 = When Jesus returns, He will bring Heaven to Earth with Him and we will live in the New Heavens and Earth and there will be no more death.

  23. Where are Paradise and Hades today? • Sheol = the place that used to contain the waiting room for both Heaven and Hell. • Paradise = the waiting room for Heaven (sounds like it’s already in Heaven now). • Hades = the waiting room for Hell (still in Sheol, not in Hell yet).

  24. The confusion in the Apostles’ Creed comes from a double translation issue: Sheol (Hebrew) = Hades (Greek) = Hell (English) • Sheol (Hebrew) the place of the dead including a good and bad side. • Hades (Greek) = the place of the dead including a good and bad side, but Hades is also the name of the bad side. • Hell (English) = the eternal place of punishment for the wicked dead.

How should we fix this issue with the Apostles’ Creed? • Throw out all creeds and just stick with the Bible (but usually end up writing a statement of faith anyway). • Throw out the Apostles’ Creed and use the Nicene Creed instead. • Delete the line “Descended into Hell”. • Change the word “Hell” to “Hades”, or “Death”. • Understand the word “Hell” to mean “Hades”, or “Death”. • Don’t come up with an unbiblical idea of what it means that Jesus descended into Hell.

  26. 5. Resurrection (Conquering death) Apostles Creed:The third day He rose again from the dead. Nicene Creed: And the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures. • Jesus really came back to life again bodily. • Since sin leads to death, conquering death proved that Jesus conquered sin and can take our sins away! (Romans 6:23, 1 Corinthians 15:54-55) • God promised He would save us this way in the OT.

  27. 6. Ascension (Coronation) and Session (Advocate/Reign) Apostles Creed:He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. Nicene Creed: And ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father. • Jesus went back to heaven to be our advocate (1 John 2:1). • Jesus is in heaven as our priest, applying the atoning sacrifice He made on earth (Hebrews 1:3, ch. 4)

  28. 7. Return (Resurrection) and Final judgement (New Heavens and New Earth) Apostles Creed: From thence [or where] He shall come to judge the quick [or living] and the dead. Nicene Creed: And He shall come again, with glory, to judge the quick [or living] and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end. • Quick = alive and kicking • Quickening = once a mother can feel her baby moving

  29. Conclusion: • Believe: in the facts and in Jesus to save you • Worship: Past, Present, Future • Obey: Humbly obey God and love people
