  2. ENERGY STAR & Standby Activities in Australia:an Update • What’s been happening in Australia? • Scope and Partners • Marketing and Communications • Future Plans

Australian Context • Australia’s Kyoto stance • Standby and miscellaneous electricity approximately 5.3 Mt CO2-e • Estimated to be increasing by 8% per annum • Government endorsed one watt target to tackle the standby power issue • 10 year Strategy – Discussion Paper to be released later this year

  4. ENERGY STAR Program • Will form one of the major voluntary mechanisms of Ten Year Standby Power Strategy • Currently 24 office equipment and 9 home electronics Partners • Beginning to recruit local Australian manufacturers • Currently investigating the addition of several more product groups

Marketing & Communications Activities • National Communications Strategy • Aims to raise awareness & understanding of the logo amongst product retailers and consumers • Promotion run through two exclusive retailers • Offer retailers an excellent selling tool and marketing opportunities • Retailers can get involved by publicising it to staff and customers, via website & mailing lists

Marketing & Communications Activities • National Communications Strategy cont… • Meetings, briefings & liaison with retailers & stakeholders • Information kit distribution to retailers & stakeholders • Media relations (supported by advertising) • Consumer competition/retailer incentive • Postcards – targeted distribution & point-of-sale • Events (e.g. The Home Show)

Market Research • Lack of good data on the office equipment and home electronics markets • Earlier research was not able to determine an accurate baseline and rigorous KPIs for assessing the Program • Study recommends a series of steps to collect and utilise more effective data • Results and process will aid information collection for products database

  9. Future Plans • Rollout of Communications Strategy • Data collection for baseline, market research and database • Possible expansion of Program to include more ENERGY STAR product groups – currently working with US EPA

ENERGY STAR & Standby Activities in New Zealand:an Update • New Zealand’s “National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Strategy” includes action on standby power. • New Zealand has been leading the development of a system to exchange information on energy standards, including specifications for standby power

Energy Standards Information System • The alignment of mandatory energy efficiency standards is a long term goal of APEC Energy Ministers • It will make best use of energy resources, have economic and environmental benefits while helping protect the environment • Exchanging information effectively, as the first step, is a vital ingredient

Energy Standards Information System • The APEC Energy Standards Information Development Project is setting up a system that: • Advises all members of proposed energy efficiency initiatives that use standards • Is an information resource on all existing energy efficiency standards • Provides a forum for making APEC input into “international” standards
