  3. Reading Goal: For students to become lifelong readers. • Guided Reading • Literature Circles • Reading Workshops • Homework • Reading homework is 10% of your child’s reading grade • Reading Menu- Students will be required to work from their menus on the Reading Weeks

  4. Language Writing Six Traits of Writing Developing editing and revising skills • All students will have a writing journal • Big 6 research paper Language Concepts • Parts of speech • Correct usage

  5. Spelling • Spelling and Dictation Tests will be given every Friday. • Please help your child prepare for the test throughout the week. • Homework • Spelling Notebook • Spelling Menu • Students must complete 3 items every week.

  6. Math • Place Value • Rounding and Estimating Numbers • Fast Facts • Understanding Multiplication • Measurement • Math homework is 10% of your child’s math grade. Students will have math a math menu every other week. These will be skill based word problems.

  7. Science • Nutrition • Health • Safety • Body Systems • The Sun • The Planets

  8. Social Studies • Centered around communities • Map Skills • Inventors • Landforms • Westward Movement

  9. Late Work • Students must turn in assignments by the due date that has been set. • Assignments that are late will have 10 points deducted per day. • After 3 days the student will receive a zero. • Homework Lab will be assigned if a student has 3 incomplete assignments

  10. Make-Up Work • If your child is absent more than 1 day, you may request work to be sent home for completion as homework. • Please make these requests no later than 10:00am, so that we have time to gather the materials.

  11. Report Cards • Report Cards will be issued each six weeks. • Progress Reports will be sent home midway through the grading period for all students. • Both Report Cards and Progress Reports should be signed and returned

  12. Homework • Homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday. Your child will have a spelling menu each week, as well as either a reading or a math menu. These will be due on Fridays. • Your child should record his/her homework in their planner. • It is important that your child studies his/her math facts and reads every night. • Students will be assigned to Homework Lab after 3 missing and/or incomplete assignments

  13. Discipline Plan The following Responsible Choices are the school rules/expectations: • Respect all people and property. • Listen to and follow directions. • Practice safety. • Be on time and have necessary materials. Students will be taught they are responsible for their choices and that choices have consequences … good or bad. Students who receive 3 or more marks in 1 day OR 5 or more marks in 1 week will be assigned After School Detention.

  14. Daily/Conduct Folders • Please check your child’s Daily Folder each day. • Initial on their conduct sheet to indicate that you have looked at the contents of their folder, including the conduct sheet.

  15. Tuesday Take-Home Folders • Every Tuesday, your child will bring home his/her Tuesday Folder. • Please review the contents of the folder with your child. • Be sure to sign the comments/signature page. No signature will result in a mark on your child’s conduct sheet under “Demonstrates Organizational Skills.” • Please sign and return any failing papers, grades below a 70.

  16. Friendly Reminders • Water bottles with a cap are allowed in third grade. (sport tops are preferred) (Water only!) • Healthy, non-messy snacks are allowed. No spoons please.

  17. Friendly Reminders Cont. • Conferences can be made at any time with your child’s teacher. Third grade conference time is 1:45-2:30 daily. Please contact your child’s teacher when you feel a conference is needed. We will start scheduling conferences in September, but we will be glad to meet with you as needed.

  18. Friendly Reminders Cont. • When your child’s method of transportation changes, please send a written note to school. Without written permission from you, we must send your child home their routine way. We cannot take your child’s word that you gave him/her permission to go home a different way. • *Car Rider system requires number from MCE.*

  19. Friendly Reminders Cont. • Toys stay at home. • Cupcakes may be passed out during recess in honor of birthdays (12:40-1:00). • Be sure to read KISD policies concerning student dress codes.
