  6. Utah’s Demographics • Minorities, chiefly Latinos, made up 61 percent of Salt Lake County's population growth from 2000 to 2006. • Refugees are also a factor-Data suggest only 10 percent of the state's recent foreign-born immigrants are refugees. Although the government provides a wide range of initial supports, the families who are now coming to Utah are larger than in the past, making it more difficult to break beyond the poverty barrier. • The proportion of children who qualify for discounted lunch prices in the Salt Lake City School District has jumped almost 10 percentage points since 1999. • At the Salt Lake City Housing Authority, the number of families waiting for affordable housing grew by almost 2,000 in the last two years, going from 5,426 at the end of 2005 to 7,295 in 2007.

  7. The Power is in Our Hands VOTE!

  8. Poverty & Discrimination in SLC • S.L.C.A.P. • Btwn. 1999 and 2006 the # of children in poverty grew from 19% to 28.4% • Due to the large LDS population and being the convention and industrial banking center of the west, SLC has a largely affluent population • SLC has the lowest white pop. In Utah(89.7%) but it is still high at 79%

  9. A More Involved Youth • In Salt lake City alone, almost a quarter of the entire population is under 18 • If we teach children when their young, they will grow up with a broader sense of community their whole lives • We need to strive to embrace civic-engaged learning in all our institutions of higher learning
