  2. Objectives of this Unit: Students will state reasons why some teens use drugs. (Knowledge) Students will explain how drug use is directly linked to health-related problems. (Knowledge, comprehension) Students will explain the 4 drug categories and their effects. (Knowledge, comprehension) Students will predict consequences of drug use. (Knowledge, comprehension, evaluation) Students will investigate the truth about some myths about drugs. (Knowledge, comprehension, analysis)

  4. DRUG &SUBSTANCE ABUSE Any substance or medicine that causes changes in a person’s mood, behavior, or bodily functions. DRUGS CAN BE • LEGAL – OTC - prescription • ILLEGAL/Illicit – against the law – not allowed to possess, use or distribute

  5. 4 DRUG CATEGORIESdrugs are categorized by the effects they have on your body • DEPRESSANTS – psychoactive drugs that SLOWS your brain and body reactions • STIMULANTS – drugs that SPEED UP the body’s activity – make you feel alert • HALLUCINOGENS –Mind Altering drugs that affect the brain. Make you see things and hear things that are NOT there. • INHALANTS – Vapors breathed through the nose or mouth. CHEAP QUICK BUZZ

Why Do People Take Drugs? • To fit in with their peers • To escape or relax • To relieve boredom • To seem more grown up • To rebel • To experiment • Can you think of more reasons? • People who take drugs think drugs are the solution..But eventually, drugs become the problem because of what the drugs do to YOU!!

  11. How do Drugs Work? DRUGS ARE ESSENTIALLY POISONS!! The amount taken determines the EFFECT Only the amount needed to achieve the effect differs…. **Some drugs are so powerful that a tiny amount is very harmful – kill you!!
