  2. What is Alcohol? • Alcohol is a legal DRUG made available to anyone who is over 21 years of age in Illinois. It is a colorless liquid with a sharp burning taste. Medically it is classified as a depressant drug.

  4. What are Alcohol’s Effects? • Depresses the Central Nervous System • Slows thinking and reflexes • Causes a loss of balance and coordination • Creates vision problems • Causes confusion, dizziness, nausea • Exaggerates feelings • May even cause unconsciousness, coma, or DEATH!

  6. What is Alcohol Addiction? • Alcohol addiction is a very serious problem. It is caused by using alcohol, and the body becoming used to having alcohol in the bloodstream. People who have this disease are often referred to as Alcoholics. These are people who do not feel well unless they have been drinking alcohol.

  7. What Can You Do? • Be aware of your surroundings • Have trustworthy friends who do not use drugs or alcohol • Practice ways to say NO • Remind yourself of the reasons you say no • Examples: family, friends, sports, your health • Talk to an adult you trust • Examples: parents, counselor, minister • If you need help you can call a community crisis help line • Alcohol Abuse Helpline (24 hours) (800) 930 - 9329
