  1. The Complete Solution to the Mercury Waste Problem MRT System International AB Magnus Nilsson Technical Director

  2. MRT System International AB • A Swedish company established in 1979. • MRT is recognised as the world leader in supplying complete lamp/mercury recycling systems. The unique technology is designed for processing a broad range of mercury bearing products. • MRT’s know-how in glass separation and material decontamination has led to the development of a Cathode Ray Tube Separator, the MRT CRT Separator

  3. The Swedish Invention • EPA requested recycling of heavy metals instead of disposal. All Swedish lamp producers had to follow the directive. • Result: Development of the first distiller in 1975. The first patent was issued in 1978.

  4. MRT Business Areas • Lamp recycling/decontamination • Crush & Separation Plant • End Cut Technology • Mercury Recovery (distillation) • Batch Distiller • Continuous Flow Distiller • Electronical waste processing (WEEE) • CRT-separating • Disc Cutting Technology • Hot Wire Technology

  7. Fluorescent Tube By-Products

  8. Mercury in Brazilian Lamps • Fluorescent 6-15 mgMixed 11-45 mgMercury vapor (HID) 13- 80 mgHP Sodium vapor (SON) 15-30 mg Metal Halide (HID) 10-170 mg Compact Fluorescent (CFL) 4-6 mg • Mercury can be present in lamps either as liquid, gas or amalgam.

  9. Mercury Health Risks • Mercury is one of the most dangerous heavy metals to be found and is highly poisonous to both the environment and human beings. Especially the mercury vapor which easily enters into the human body when inhaling it. • Mercury may cross the placenta and blood brain barriers and accumulate in the brain and fetal tissues. • Mercury is a potent neurotoxin that can permanently damage the brain of developing fetuses and infants if exposure occurs at critical times. Therefore, pregnant women, nursing mothers, young children and women of childbearing age (ages 15-44) are most at risk. • The majority of the mercury entering lakes, streams, rivers, and oceans comes from the atmosphere. • Wind can carry airborne mercury great distances before it is deposited on land and water, primarily by rain and snow, contaminating remote places hundreds of miles from the mercury source. • Mercury can be found in over 10.000 different items.

  10. Vicious Mercury Cycle

  11. WHO 1 μg/m3 Emission OSHA (USA) 0,1 mg/m3 Emission EA (UK) 0,025 mg/m3 Emission WHO 50 nmol/L Blood The mercury content in 10.000 lamps is equal to 50g of mercury. In an area of 100m2 x 3m height, the mercury contamination would be 0,17-0,34 mg/m3. The total annual consumption of lamps in Brazil, if discarded improperly, would be equal to a mercury exposure of 500-1000kg. Mercury Guidelines/Limits

  12. Global Hg Change 2000-2005 Decrease • Others - 79 % • Batteries - 63 % • Chlor-alkali Production - 22 % • Measuring/Control Devices - 9 % • Electrical/Electronic Devices - 9 % • Dental Amalgam - 1 % Increase • Artisanal Mining 54 % • Lighting 32 %

  13. Europe, WEEE DirectiveWaste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment • The purpose of the directive is to prevent waste or to reduce waste by re-use or recycling. • By August 13, 2005 all member states had to ensure that collection systems were set up. Producers of electrical and electronic equipment provides for the financing of collection, treatment and environmentally sound disposal. The polluter pays! • By December 31, 2006 the member states must ensure a separate collection rate of 4kg per inhabitant and year.
