Today’s Objectives • Define Programs of Study in the context of Academies, SLCs and Career Technical Education (CTE) • Develop or improve effective Programs of Study by using research, data, best practices, community resources and needs of the 21st century economy • To build meaningful school reform

A document that outlines a series of courses that incorporates and aligns HS and postsecondary elements Integrates academic and career technical content in a coordinated progression of non-duplicative courses in an industry sector/career cluster Offers opportunity for HS students to acquire postsecondary credits Leads to an industry recognized credential or certificate at the postsecondary level, or an associate or baccalaureate degree. Everything on the last slide AND Integrates academic and technical curriculum through interdisciplinary projects and work-based learning Provides support services necessary to ensure all students are successful Includes strong and sustained partnerships with business, community and other stakeholders Incorporates career guidance and mentoring opportunities

  10. Developing Programs of Study (Suggested Process) Continual Process

  11. Establish Leadership / Advisory Team Oversee the development of Program of Study, byselecting the industry sectors and building political and financial support.

  12. Who should be on the Leadership/Advisory Team • Postsecondary representatives from a full range of institutions including 4-year university, comm. colleges, trade/technical schools and military • County/district CTE/ROP representative • Superintendent or designee • High school principal(s) • Counselor(s) • Economic development representative

  13. How to choose the industry sectors and pathways? • Job growth / market data analysis – at the regional, state and national levels • What is already in place at the HS that is strong and could be built upon? • What is in place at the HS that must be eliminated? • What facilities are available? What facilities need to be improved or constructed? • What post-secondary programs can be articulated avoiding duplication? • Student interest

  19. The Leadership / Advisory Team Selects & Organizes Implementation Teams A group of participants who will fully develop the program of study with a focus on curriculum.

  20. Who is on the Implementation Teams • Post-secondary representatives • CTE teachers • Academic teachers • College and Career Center and/or Work-based Learning representative(s) • Counselors • Career and Technical Student Organization (CSTO) rep/advisor

  21. Implementation Team Develop the curriculum for the Program of Study. The curriculum should address knowledge and skills essential for the Industry Sector, as well as national and state academy standards.

What does the Implementation Team do? • Identify or develop the non-duplicative sequence of both the CTE and academic courses at secondary & postsecondary levels • Develop dual credit and/or articulation agreements • Decide how to integrate college and career guidance in the POS • Decide how to integrate 21st century skills in the POS

Review • The Program of Study must be reviewed and approved by the Leadership / Advisory Team. • The role of the Leadership / Advisory Team is to: • Obtain business endorsement • Discuss budget, facilities, and equipment needs and support • Evaluate the Programs of Study for success and relevancy • Keep all stakeholders informed (including middle school, • high school and postsecondary)

Articulation • POS should provide opportunities for students to earn college credit through credit-based transition programs. • Members of the Implementation Team work together to: • Offer dual credit courses between high school & college • Seek regular articulation to ensure students will not have to repeat instruction • Align high school & postsecondary courses by common standards & competencies • Apply for statewide articulation

Staff Development • For POS to remain effective instructors and support staff must be up-to-date on current standards, processes and technology. • Sustained, intensive, and focused opportunities for administrators, teachers, and faculty foster Programs of Study design, implementation and maintenance.

Examples Of Staff Development To Promote Effective POS • Teacher externships • Project-Based Learning training and follow up time to plan and improve PBL curriculum • Regular conversations b/t academic, CTE and industry representatives • Use of technology to improve sharing of content (ex. curriculum mapping)

Community Outreach • POS and their benefits lack value if no one is aware of them. • Market and recruit students, parents, educational staff, and the community. • Continuous input and support from industry and colleges is essential for continuing the Programs of Study. • Grant development should be pursued to support the Programs of Study.

  28. Ongoing Evaluation and Improvement Systems and strategies to gather quantitative and qualitative data on both Programs of Study components and student outcomes are crucial for ongoing efforts to develop and implement Program of Study.
