Lee High School Lockheed Martin COURSES Dr.Pekarek (Ph.D. Purdue University) measures magnetic properties of semiconductorsusing a SQUID magnetometer and a PPMS with liquid nitrogen & helium. Current Sponsor: National Science Foundation Dr.Gasparov (Ph.D. Institute for Solid State Physics- Moscow) uses a Raman spectrometer to make measurements on the world’s oldest magnetic material, magnetite and he measures properties of diamonds. Current Sponsor: National Science Foundation Introductory Introduction to Physics - Astronomy - Earth Science Algebra Physics I&II – Honors Calculus Physics I&II - Modern Physics Core Mathematical Physics - Classical Mechanics – Quantum Mechanics Optics – Electronics - Electricity & Magnetism - Statistical Mechanics Advanced Physics Laboratory Electives Solid State Physics – Astrophysics I&II - Nuclear Physics - Adv. Topics Other Programs Physics Internship-Physics Teaching Apprenticeship - Honors-in-Major Physics Exchange Program in France Dr.Chen (Ph.D. Ohio University) measures electrical transport properties of organic semiconductors. Dr. Chen is also specialized in fabrication of nanodevices. Dr.Arenas(Ph.D. University of Florida) studies optical properties of metallic and semiconducting samples using a high-resolution infrared spectrometer. PHYSICS STUDENT CLUB SPS Advisor: Dr. Daniel Arenas PHYSICS RESEARCH AT UNF TheoreticalSolid State Physics Research The Society of Physics Students (SPS) club is very active on the UNF campus. The Club sponsors free physics tutoring, competitions, and road trips to regional & state physics sites. Experimental Sensor Physics Research Group SCIENCE AND CULTURE INITIATIVE (SCI) Director : Dr. John Anderson (Ph.D. Harvard University) Dr.Garner (Chair of Department, Ph.D. Ohio State University) uses computer workstations to model magnetic ions in semiconductors. Past Sponsors: National Science Foundation , Research Corporation & Amoco Corporation Dr.Patel (Ph.D. Sardar Patel University-India) measures electrical properties of semiconductor thin film gas sensors and structural properties using a scanning electron microscope and he uses balloons and rockets for atmospheric research. Current Sponsor: NASA Dr. Huebner (Ph.D. University of California-Riverside)leads the multidisciplinary development of sensor researchat UNF that has received about $ 5 M over the past decade. Past Sponsor: Department of Defense TheSCI’s mission is to promote science literacy. Itoversees the Joe Berg Society’s Science and Humanities Seminars Series for academically talented local high school studentsand Dr. Anderson directs the Physics Teaching Apprenticeship Program. Geophysics-Paleontology Research Computational and ExperimentalNuclear Physics Research Theoretical Astrophysics Research FINANCIAL SUPPORT Students in physics are eligible for a number of scholarships & grants (e.g., the Hercules Scholarship, Summer Student Research Grant, Teaching Apprenticeship, Internships,TLO’s) and are often supported by grading for physics faculty, working on campus as physics tutors or working with the physics faculty as research assistants. [ Picture not available] Dr. Albright (Ph.D. University of California-Riverside) conducts geological and paleontological field research in Utah, Oregon, and Mongolia.  In addition to studying dinosaurs, marine reptiles, and mammals, he also analyzes the magnetic properties of fossil-bearing sedimentary rocks to accurately determine the age of prehistoric animals. Current Sponsor: Department of Interior Dr. Gay (Ph.D. Florida State University) does modeling and experiments on nuclear reactions. Past Sponsor: National Science Foundation Dr. Jane MacGibbon (Ph.D. University of Cambridge) conducts theoretical research on primordial black holes and varying fundamental constants. 2011-2012 Visitors Drs. Douglas, Kar and Pezdirtz & Mr. Montgomery
