  1. CH 13, Sect. 1 – Technology and Science of Exploration. • Europeans obtained a great deal of information about exploration from the Chinese and Arabs. • This allowed Europeans to sail into the open ocean.

  2. Caravels – small but very sturdy ships that were easy to maneuver and sailed fast.

  3. Cartography – the science of designing maps. Helped with navigation, noted dangerous obstacles.

  4. Compass: Helped with general direction, but not accurate enough for open ocean navigation.

  5. Astrolabe: Allowed navigators to figure out latitude – most important for navigation.

  6. Lateen or Triangular sails – allowed ships to tack and sail into the wind.
