  10. Key 2: Parent & Child links • Full text links (Parent links) • Full text links supplied by journal content providers to LinkOut • Library links (Child links) • Links in PubMed created by LinkOut for libraries which point to the full-text at the provider website

  11. Key 2: Parent & Child links + LinkOut Links Formula Provider Full text links (Parent) Library Information Library Links (Child) +

  12. Problem: “I have a license for the journal Psycho-Oncology, why are there no links for it in PubMed?” Because LinkOut has not received the Provider full text links for the articles

  13. Key 2: Full text links (Parent) • The Provider URL syntax to access full text may differ from that of journal Web sites e.g. Elsevier links point to a linking hub not articles e.g. Broken links • LinkOut participation is voluntary…ask your providers to participate in LinkOut

  14. Key 2: Library links (Child) • Authentication-authorization is managed by the full text provider • Updates are effective in 48 hours

  15. Problem: “The LinkOut Journal List shows Noise & Health availability from 1998 through 2005. Why are not all the article links for 1998 present?”

  16. Key 3: Article level–Journal level • LinkOut works at the article level • Providers are not obligated to provide all article links for an issue • Gaps exist within the listed date range for a journal

  17. Key 3: Article level–Journal level • The date range that appears in the LinkOut journal list is an aggregation of the article level links supplied by full text Providers

  18. Problem: “The LinkOut Journal List shows Noise & Health availability from 1998 through 2005. Why are not all the article links for the 1998 issue present?” Because LinkOut has not received the Provider links for every individual article published in that journal for 1998
