  13. INSARAG was established in 1991 following the 1988 Armenia earthquake. • Guided by UN General Assembly Resolution 57/150 “Strengthening the Effectiveness and Coordination of International Urban Search and Rescue Assistance”.

  14. Global network of more than 80 countries and organizations • Aims to establish minimum international standards and establish methodology for international coordination

  15. Facilitate coordination between USAR teams responding to a disaster. • Practice coordination and using standards through exercises. • The INSARAG Guidelines can be found online.

  18. The INSARAG External Classification (IEC) is a voluntary, independent peer review process of international USAR teams. • Classified as "Medium” or "Heavy” teams.   • As of 2017, there are 47 internationally classified teams globally.

The Levels of an IEC: Heavy Teams -technical search and rescue in collapsed or failed structures of heavy wood/ reinforced masonry with structural steel -rigging and lifting -international deployment mandated -can operate at 2 sites simultaneously Medium Teams Can perform all the above, but only has the capacity for a single work site at a time
