  7. Review

  8. Review Creation Patriarchs Exodus

  9. Review Creation: God reveals His goodness and mercy Patriarchs: Job, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph Exodus: • After several hundred years, God delivered Israel from slavery in Egypt • He demonstrated His power and glory through the plagues He sent on the Egyptians • God watched over and cared for the Israelites during their journey through the wilderness, and worked through events and the giving of the law to shape them into a nation that was holy to Himself.

  10. Overview • Israel’s response to the outstretched hand of God reflects the proud, stub-born, rebellious heart of all humanity. • Even in the visible presence of God, the Israelites turned out to be no dif-ferent from those that reject Him today. • Man is presented with the struggle to live by faith in God, because he is na-turally disposed to live by sight, trap-ped by his fleshly existence; blind to spiritual truth and spiritual reality. • When God’s people walk in unbelief they rebel against God and align them-selves with the evil powers of darkness.

  11. Key Truth • Clinging to God’s promises and presence in the midst of difficulty assures us of His care and provision and keeps us from making foolish choices that can bring certain judgment.

  12. Rebellion in the Camp Numbers 11-16 The Exodus Era

  13. After the Fall, the nature of humanity defaulted to a system that questions God • His character (His goodness) • His Word (that He will do what He says) Israel’s wilderness experience reveals the ugliness of sin emerging from the hearts of the people • They committed sexual immorality • They tested God • They complained • God was not pleased with most of them Paul knew the significance of Israel’s story in the wilderness • 1 Corinthians 10:6, 11-12 -  Now these things happened as examples for us, so that we would not crave evil things as they also craved…Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall. The Spirit of Rebellion

  14. Four Stories of Rebellion Numbers 11-14 & 16 Romans 8

  15. The Demanding Spirit of the Flesh www.themegallery.com Numbers 11:4-6 • The people complained about God’s provision • They tired of the daily supply of manna • They wanted something different • The two causes of their discontent • The influence of foreigners (“mixed multitude”) (4) • Persuade God’s people to think He is withholding some ‘good’ from them • Begin to focus on what they don’t have instead of thanking God for what they do have • The memory of the past (5) • They forget their bondage in Egypt and desparation for deliverance • Instead they focus on what they ate in Egypt • Paul warns believers of the destructive path heeding fleshly desires • Romans 8:5-7a

  16. A Domineering Woman Numbers 12:1-15 • Miriam’s relationship to Moses & role as a leader • She is Moses’ older sister • She has a leadership role among the women (Ex 15:20-21) • Miriam takes exception to Moses’ choice in a wife • She may have seen the new wife as a threat to her role as the major female influence in Moses’ life • She and Aaron challenge Moses’ authority as leader of Israel (2) • Miriam is effectively trying to take God’s place in Moses’ life • She is called out by God and suffers as a leper, separated from the people for seven days

  17. A Disbelieving Band of Spies Numbers 13:1-3, 25-31 • The negative influence of the ten faithless men • Ten of the men operate from a dismal view of God and His power • Joshua and Caleb see Canaan in the light of God’s greatness Numbers 14:1-4 • The negative response of the people of Israel • The faithless attitude of the ten spies leads to despair (1) • The faithless attitude of the ten spies sparks rebellion (2a) • The negative view of life by the entire congregation • Death in Egypt or the desert is better than God’s presence (2b) • A return to slavery in Egypt is better than receiving God’s promise (4)

  18. A Disenchanted Group of Leaders Numbers 16:1-3 • At some point in their desert wandering, three men lead an uprising against Moses • Korah – a leader of the tribe of Levi • Dathan and Abiram – leaders in the tribe of Reuben • They rally 250 other representatives of the congregation in opposition to the leadership of both Moses (political) and Aaron (religious) • The focus of their discontent with Moses and Aaron • They were no more qualified than anyone else to lead (3a) • They had unjustly set themselves up as leaders of the nation (3b) • The rebels overlooked the fact that the LORD Himself had appointed Moses and Aaron, not man

  19. Conclusions • Today the voice of Satan is expressed in concert with the world’s advertisements that awaken the cravings of the heart and flesh • Thoughts centered on satisfying the flesh always lead to discontentment and rebellion, one step away from total alignment with the forces of evil • Failing to trust in God’s power and promises results in faithlessness and despair • Our words can either be a “bad report” about God that will influence others to unbelief or words of faith that lead them to trust God • Insubordination to God’s designated authority is insubordination against God

  20. Application What does this lesson teach about God? Man? Sin? Redemption? *People who are entrenched in an attitude of rebellion cannot find God’s redemption (faithless generation condemned to die in the desert)

  21. Discussion What were the people longing for when they were complaining to go back to Egypt? (Num 11:5) What long term consequences were they willing to ignore for the short term satisfaction of the flesh? Why did God choose Israel? (Deut 7:7-11) Not because of their size or strength Because of His love for them and faithfulness to His promises What does this passage tell us about God? He is God His is faithful to keep his promises His faithfulness is extended to ALL who love and trust Him God’s love in NOT unconditional, but it IS unrelenting
