  1. Personal Digital Assistance (PDA) Design Plan Hortencia Torres October 2010 3332.60

  2. Needs Assessment: • The instructional/training problem or opportunity • Teachers have problems recording the children’s assessment. • They take a lot o time doing manually these assessments.

  3. Needs Assessment cont: • The analysis of the gap between what is available and what should be available. • Teachers needs a software that could help them recording the assessment. • Personal Digital Assistance is a device they can use to record the assessment.

  4. Needs Assessment cont: • The recommended solution for filling the gap • PDAs are portable devices and very easy to use in the classroom. • They have a systematic method for observing children between 3 and 4 years old.

  5. Instructional Goal: • Teachers will use PDAs to record student observations as they happen. • Teachers will be able to do observations during class time using the light and portable palm pilot.

  6. Performance Objectives: • Using PDAs teachers could do students' observations at the same time they are evaluated. • Using PDAs teachers can choose a child name before to start the assessment. • Using PDAs teachers could sent observations with the touch of a button to a central database on the Web without wasting valuable time typing notes into the computer.

  7. Assessment of Learning Outcomes:

  8. Learner Characteristics: • Use this slide to describe your target audience. Provide at least three learner characteristics along with a description of their possible implications for the design of your instruction. When thinking about the learner characteristics ask yourself the following questions: • Who is the intended audience for this training module? • What skills do they have or need in order to successfully complete the training? • What additional information do I need to know about the intended audience in order to develop the best training possible for this group?

  9. Learner Characteristics: • This web-based training is designed for teaching staff that will be implementing children’s assessment. • Teachers need to be knowledge in computer skills and be able to navigate in the web program. • Teachers are using a paper-and pencil to do the assessment. They need a method more fast and accurate to do record this children evaluation.

  10. Learning Context: • The Instructional Setting • This web-based training will take place in the computer room from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. • PDAs will be available one per teacher.

  11. Instructional Strategies • Introductions • This tutorial is to help teachers create children assessments in an easy way using a palm pilot

  12. Instructional Strategies cont: • Objectives • Train teachers in the PDA use to help them do children observation with an easy method. • Have children assessments with more accurate results.

  13. Instructional Strategies cont: • Goals • Teachers can have fast and accurate results on children assessment with less paper work.

  14. Instructional Strategies cont: • Presentation and information. • This web-based training will demonstrate how easy is to operate PDAs. • Teachers need these steps to follow this training module. (Next Slide)

  15. Steps to Operate a PDA • Record Observations • Developmental Domains • Assessment • How to use a PDA • HotSync • Reports

  16. Instructional Strategies cont: • Learners will learn how to do an assessment using a PDA • The instructor will be present to help learners during the training. • Teachers will practice with other learners with the PDA.

  17. Instructional Strategies cont: • Assessment • Teachers will respond a 5 question quiz to see if the training is well developed or need to be improved.

  18. Instructional Resources: • Teachers will need a computer with Internet service and a PDA to learn how to operate the device during a child assessment.

  19. Training Module Blueprint:

  20. Formative Evaluation: • Teachers will be evaluated with a informal survey. This survey will determine if the manual is easy to understand. • Teachers will be evaluated by a peer evaluator to see if the learners need more help or if the training needs to be redesigned.

  21. Summary • Teachers need to evaluate children three times on a year. They have a lot of work doing these evaluation manually. PDAs are easy to operate devices. Teachers will see how easy is to record children observation with the PDA at the same time they are working with the children.
