  2. Office of Safety, Security and Infrastructure (SC-31) • Environment, Safety and Health is under SC-31. • Provide staff support to the Chief Operating Officer, SC-3. • New approach on burdensome directives.

  3. Management Approach to Directives • Justifications for directives development are reviewed more closely, before the development process begins. • Move towards “what” the department wants, not “how” to do it.

  4. Nanoscale Safety • DOE P 456.1, “Secretarial Policy Statement on Nanoscale Safety” (September 2005) • Adopt national standards and safety and health best practices • Stay abreast of current research and knowledge • Secretary Bodman decides against developing additional DOE directive at this time (July 2007)

  5. Nanoscale Safety - Guidance • “Approach to Nanomaterial ES&H” • Revision 2 – June 2007 • Developed by 17 laboratories • Non-mandatory guidance for Nanoscale Science Research Centers, funded by BES. • Addresses ventilation, waste, program effectiveness. • Available on our website: • http://www.sc.doe.gov/sc-80/sc-83/docs/Nanoscale_ESH.pdf

SC-31: Examples of what we do • 10 CFR 851, “Worker Safety and Health Program” • Review variances submitted by the laboratories. • Work with HSS to resolve issues raised by the field. • ORNL - Variance Request for Pressure Vessels • Will similar requests be coming from other sites? • Jay Larson is lead for 10 CFR 851 issues. • 301-903-9869 • Jay.Larson@science.doe.gov

  7. ES&H Data Reviews • New HSS/DOE effort to review ES&H data from CAIRS and ORPS • SC-31 Quarterly Safety Reports • CAIRS/Injury data is analyzed and measured against the SC safety goals. • ORPS data is compiled and analyzed for management review.
