  1. LEARNING ENGLISH IN OXFORD PRE-ENTRY ESOL

  2. Pre-entry ESOL in Oxford • Pilot in 2016, and feedback from the Refugee, Asylum-Seeker Coordination Group highlighted: • Location is key • Provision of childcare voucher and travel passes • Embedded learning; orientation activities • Longer courses; more contact hours • ESOL partnership to link up learning pathways for students

  3. What has worked? • Location & learning environment • Course design • High progression: 9/13 on to Entry 1 • Orientation activities • Linking to volunteering • Attending community events • Celebration event for students

  4. Learner experience Student R Life is so easy now. When I came to Oxford I was not able to go anywhere on my own because I didn’t have the vocabulary. I couldn’t go anywhere without my husband. I’m very happy now because now I can go anywhere, I can communicate with people and can buy a bus ticket for myself and go shopping. I feel more confident.

  5. Key consideration Students with some prior educational experience appear to perform better. Therefore, how can we best engage and support the progressive learning of migrants who have limited educational experience and/or low-level literacy in their own native language?
