GRASSLANDS. General Description. Grasslands are huge areas of land in the middle of North America known as prairies. The prairies are a type of grassland dominated by plants and grasses. Very few trees grow on the prairies and are usually widely scattered. Locations of Grasslands.

  2. General Description • Grasslands are huge areas of land in the middle of North America known as prairies. • The prairies are a type of grassland dominated by plants and grasses. • Very few trees grow on the prairies and are usually widely scattered.

  3. Locations of Grasslands • Grasslands are mostly located in Europe and North America.

  4. Temperate Grasslands • In Europe, temperate grasslands are called steppes. In North America, they are called prairies. • There are three types of grasses which dominate temperate grasslands: short grasses, mid grasses, and tall grasses.

  5. Plants in the Grassland • Goldenrod • Corn • Yellow eyed grass • Queen Ann’s Lace

  6. Animals in the Grassland • Bison • Horse • Red Tailed Hawk • Monarch Butterfly • Prairie Dogs

  7. Adaptations for Plants and Animals • There are no known adaptations for plants and animals in the grasslands.

  8. Human Affect • Grassland is the most overused biome in the world. • Over 70% of all agriculture occurs in grasslands. • The European Steppe and the Great Plains have almost completely disappeared to overdevelopment.
