  5. EarthquakeFacts • Epicenter in Wenchuan County • Caused by tectonic faults rupturing and grinding hundreds of kilometers along the Longmen Mountains • Many were angered over the amount of children that died in schools

  7. Earthquake Effect on Schools • Around 900 teenagers buried under collapsed school building • At one school, only 100 of 420 students survived • Estimated at least 9,000 children died at school • About 1.7 million sq meters destroyed

Earthquake Effect on Society • Immediately after the quake, the government announced it didn’t threaten social stability, yet it was still their top priority • The evening of the disaster, most slept in their cars, and remained incredibly frightful for months • Still believed by many that construction in schools was reason for deaths, not just quake

  14. After the Earthquake: Aid • Began 90 minutes after earthquake • 50,000 troops deployed • Landslides and heavy rain inhibited rescue • Helicopters deployed over 15,600 troops

  15. After the Earthquake: Medical Care • Red Cross supplied tents, medical supplies, drinking water, and food • Outside donors were encouraged to donate cash in lieu of supplies • Healthcare poor in the area
