  1. Welcome To The Services Of The Dunlap church of Christ We Are Delighted You Are Here!

  2. Welcome To The Services Of The Dunlap church of Christ If You Have Questions, Just Ask!

  3. I Kings 13:1-2 “And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of the LORD unto Bethel: and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense.”

  4. (2) And he cried against the altar in the word of the LORD, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith the LORD; Behold, a child shall be born unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he offer the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men's bones shall be burnt upon thee.”

  5. II Chronicles 34 “Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem one and thirty years. (2) And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the ways of David his father, and declined neither to the right hand, nor to the left.”

  6. (3) For in the eighth year of his reign while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father: and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images.”

  7. And they brake down the altars of Baalim in his presence; and the images, that were on high above them, he cut down; and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images, he brake in pieces, and made dust of them, and strowedit upon the graves of them that had sacrificed unto them.”

  8. (5) And he burnt the bones of the priests upon their altars, and cleansed Judah and Jerusalem.”

  9. (6) And so did he in the cities of Manasseh, and Ephraim, and Simeon, even unto Naphtali, with their mattocks round about. (7) And when he had broken down the altars and the groves, and had beaten the graven images into powder, and cut down all the idols throughout all the land of Israel, he returned to Jerusalem.”

  10. (8) Now in the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had purged the land, and the house, he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, and Maaseiah the governor of the city, and Joah the son of Joahaz the recorder, to repair the house of the LORD his God.”

  11. SOMETHING IS LOST

  12. (14) And when they brought out the money that was brought into the house of the LORD, Hilkiah the priest found a book of the law of the LORD given by Moses. (15) And Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the LORD. And Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan.”

  13. Background • Israel had lived under wicked rulers for the past 57 years, and during this time had lost the book of the law. • During Josiah’s reign, the book was found, read, and implemented.

  14. Lessons To Consider • How readily available the Bible is today? • It is possible to lose the Bible through neglect(Hebrews 5:12). • It is possible to lose the Bible through tradition(Matthew 15:6; Mark 7). • It is possible to lose the Bible through misplaced trust in other people (I Kings 13:18; I John 4:1; I Timothy 4:1-2)

  15. Why We Need The Book • It gives our lives stability (Luke 24:13-17) • It shows us the way to Heaven (Psalm 119:105 “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”)

  16. Think About It! • There is a direct connection between how much one loves God and how much one reads His word. • There is no excuse for ignorance(II Chronicles 34:21; Acts 17:30-31). • Which is worse: Losing or not using the word of God? (Luke 12:42-47).
