  3. Interesting Facts Cooper interned for the CIA during the summer after his sophomore and junior years at Yale. He is obsessed with American Idol. His mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, was a famous author as well as other things. He is the great-great-great grandson of the New York Central Railroad founder Cornelius Vanderbilt. His brother, Carter Cooper, committed suicide by jumping off of the terrace of his mother’s 14 story penthouse.

  4. How Did He Start His Career? Cooper started his journalism career by making a fake press pass and covering conflicts in Rwanda, Somalia, Bosnia, and Asia. This led to his job with Channel One as a fact-checker before becoming freelance news correspondent and then a finally a chief international correspondent. In 1993, he was hired to work for ABC News.

  5. Career at ABC News • Cooper started as a corresponded for ABC News but soon became the co-anchor of the overnight-news World News Now. • In the year 2000 he became the host of ABC’s The Mole.

  6. Joining CNN • Coopers decision to join CNN was a result of the September 11th bombings. • He wished to get back to “hard” news and was hired in January 2002 as a correspondent and substitute anchor. • By January 2003, Cooper had his own show called Anderson Cooper 360.

Awards • He earned… • the Nation Headliners Award for his tsunami coverage, • an Emmy for contributing to ABC’s coverage of Princess Diana’s funeral, • a Silver Plaque for his coverage of the Bosnian civil war, • a Bronze Telly for his coverage of the famine in Somalia, • a Bronze Award for his report on political Islam, • and a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding TV Journalism for his 20/20 coverage of the high school athlete Corey Johnson.

  8. Legend • He is known by some as the most human news anchor. • He is also known as a sex symbol. • He is “Gawker.com’s No. 1 obsession”

  9. Philosophy • He is extremely against biased news reporting. • He is very interested in war. He claims this is a result of his brother’s suicide. • He believes that some journalist get too full of themselves. For that reason, he has a very humble view of current success.
