Synopsis - Introduction • Problem • India has around 13 million child laborers • About 3 to 5 lakh children are forcibly engaged in prostitution • At least 18 million children live on the streets in India • Child abuse and poverty figures are worsening the problem • What is the Government doing? • Precious little. The state of children in villages and city slums continues to be pitiable • Funds evaporate before they reach Government Schools especially in villages • Despite ban on Child labor and Child prostitution, it continues to exist Continued

Synopsis - Introduction • The Revolution • Children aged 7-12 years in a remote village of Maharashtra have brought their non-functional school back to life. • A school where education was a made a mockery of, is now a place that children and teachers take pride in • Children have created a Bal Panchayat (Children’s Government) to govern their school and other schools in nearby villages, rescuing scores of children from child labor • Where • Tandulwadi village in Parbhani District of Maharashtra

Synopsis - The Story • 13 year old Yusuf Pathan worked as a construction worker, drawing Rs.30 as daily salary. • He was rescued by the Bal Panchayat and sent back to School • In last 2.5 years, the Bal Panchayat has been successful in sending back children to school in 220 villages • Nearly 300 villages now have been covered under the Bal Panchayat revolution. • Bal Panchayat members meet every month to review ongoing projects and plan future ones. • To persuade reluctant students/parents, the Bal Panchayat organises village rallies and picketing outsidehomes. Synopsis - The Story continued • The children also take up the responsibility of keeping schools clean, installation of educational aids, monitoring of midday meals and punctuality of teachers. • “These young kids are far more empowered than their urban counterparts. They can talk about issues with as much ease as they talk about films and music. I see future leaders of India in them" says Kiran Sharma, an NGO executive who works toward empowering the poorest areas of the country • “Now, the people in village have realised that what we are doing is for the good of the village. In fact, they feel proud of us” says one of the Bal Panchayat members
