    1. MIMES to simulate Dynamics in Ecosystem Service Values

    3. The Millennium Development Goals Report 2009 UN “Nine years ago, world leaders set far-sighted goals to free a major portion of humanity from the shackles of extreme poverty, hunger, illiteracy and disease. They established targets for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of women, environmental sustainability and a global partnership for development. In short, they adopted a blueprint for a better world.”

    5. The Scarce Resources

    6. The “nature” of scarce resources

    7. “Ecosystems are being degraded at a significant rate.” The recent Millennium Ecosystem Assessment concluded that 60% of ecosystem services studied are severely degraded or being used unsustainably. This has significant consequences for development. The poorest and most vulnerable groups, especially those living in rural areas, tend to be most directly dependent on ecosystem services. Poor people are also less able to access substitutes to services provided by ecosystems. Call for proposals: 3/12/09 ECOSYSTEM SERVICES FOR POVERTY ALLEVIATION (ESPA)

    9. Ecosystem functions: The capacity of natural processes and components to provide goods and services that satisfy human needs. (de Groot, 1992) Ecosystem Services: Valued Ecosystem Functions.
