DG Near- General Presentation • Reorganisation of DGs in the Juncker Commission • Bundling of Elargement Negotiations and Neighbourhood Policy in one DG of the Commission • The Neighbourhood directorate of DEVCO including Ukraine Support Group were moved to the newly created DG NEAR (Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations) • The Task Force Turkish Cypriot Community which was previously a part of the DG for Enlargement is moved to DG Regional and Urban Policy

DG Near- General Presentation • The mission of DG NEAR is to take forward the EU's neighbourhood and enlargement policies, as well as coordinating relations with EEA-EFTA countries as far as Commission policies are concerned. DG NEAR works closely with the European External Action Service and the line DGs in charge of thematic priorities.

  5. DG Near- General Presentation • In the enlargement area, DG NEAR assists those countries with a perspective to join the EU in meeting the criteria defined by the TEU and the European Council. DG NEAR closely monitors the progress of enlargement countries towards the EU and supports accession negotiations. • In the European Neigbourhood area, NEAR is implementing assistance actions. It supports reform and democratic consolidation, and strengthens the prosperity, stability and security around Europe.

DG Near- General Presentation • DG Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations is based in Brussels and has approximately 1,650 staff members in Brussels and in the EU Delegations in the partner countries, working under the political supervision of Commissioner Johannes Hahn and managed by Director General Christian Danielsson.

DG Near- General Presentation • Further changes in coming weeks: merger of a few units in the Western Balkans Directorate and creation of nine centres of thematic expertise. • Centres of thematic expertise reflect political priorities of the DG, including the three enlargement fundamentals (rule of law, public administration reform and economic governance). • Unit A3 in charge of thematic support for economic governance, including statistics.

DG Near- ESTAT cooperation • New focus on economic governance will further intensify cooperation with Eurostat (statistical support for economic reform programs and public administration reform). • Cooperation between the services has intensified over the last years: statistics are crucial for evidence based decision making (e.g. SEE 2020, IPA performance indicators). • The cooperation between the services is very good • NEAR will continue to support statistical capacity building • ESTAT will continue to serve the policies of the Commission in external relations

DG Near- Economic Priorities • Economic reform programmes in Western Balkans • Review of enlargement package: introduction of more elements of comparability between the countries and assessing more where countries stand and priorities • Pilot chapters already this year incl. Chapter 18 Statistics • Ukraine economic stabilisation and support to comprehensive reforms. Also for other DCFTAs. • Enhanced thematic support for Neighbourhood
