  4. BE CURIOUS – DISCOVER OUR BEACHES BE CURIOUS – DISCOVER OUR PANCAKES Crepes or Galettes? Discover the secrets of both! • In Brittany, there are two types of pancakes the crêpe or the galette. The “crêpe” is made with soft wheat flour, have a much lighter colour and are normally served with a sweet topping. Whilst the “galette” however, is made from buckwheat flour. The “galette” pancakes are eaten mainly as savoury part of a meal. • The origin of buckwheatIn the twelfth century, the Crusaders brought buckwheat , also called "black wheat“ to Europe from Asia .It was another century later that buckwheat arrived in Brittany. With it’s humid and temperate climate Brittany was perfect for growing this plant. The Bretons soon discovered that the flour from buckwheat could be used to make a savoury pancake, the “galette” . • Our beaches Lay out your beach towel, put your feet in the sand, then jump into the water. Let's discover our 5 beaches! La plage du Moulin La plage du Moulin is an excellent beach for families, with its parking lot, toilets and showers. It's a shady and gently sloped beach that will appeal to the whole family. Offering the possibilities for swimming, beach games, collecting seashells or shore fishing. La plage de l’Avant-Port Hidden behind the “Penthièvre” breakwater, this family friendly beach with it’s colored wooden beach huts is accessed via the “Goulet” , a passage between two large rocks or via a tunnel carved through the cliff. It is said that the fishermen leaving for the great fishing grounds off Iceland, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia never embarked without their delicious products .... 150 years later, all that is required to release the full flavour of this culinary heritage, is only a piece of good traditional bread. The Boujaron: more than a simple “eau de vie”! • Initially a little tin cup measure that was used to distribute rations of “eau de vie” (a type of brandy) to sailors. The "Boujaron“. by association, has become the name of the drink itself. • The only “eau de vie” with a maritime ancestry dating back 4 to 5 hundred years, Boujaron is a key example of the heritage of this region of Brittany. • Distilled out of the best ciders of the Goëlo region of Brittany, from Bréhat to Saint-Brieuc in the Côtesd’Armor. Boujaron“eau de vie” is considered an authentic taste of maritime life. With a strong taste and a robust assertive character with a marked woody note, it is said to evoke memories recalling the old spirit of adventure of former mariners. 21 4

The Viaduct of the "Pourrhis”  Nestled in the heart of the Ponto Valley, the viaduct reflects the history of the “Little Train of the North Coast” that brought the bathers and visitors to the resort from 1905 to 1956. It's the work of Louis Harel de la Noë, Chief Engineer of Roads and Bridges. In this position he dealt with the construction of railways, stations or related works of art, contributing to the development of the North Coast Railway. Restored and opened for crossing the Ponto Valley, an area which offers many hiking trails to walk or cycle. Several hypotheses have been advanced to explain the origin of the name "Pourrhis. The word "pourri" (rotten) can refer to poor land and humid valleys and could, therefore, be associated with the Viaduct which lies in the damp Ponto Valley. The "h" was probably added to the original word to dissociate it from the negative connotation of the word "rotten". The other version possibly the conjunction of two Breton words "pourh" (defines a plant that grows in wet areas) and the word “id” (meaning place). Resulting in the word "pourh’id” which by common usage become “Pourrhis” • Mobile Sweet Shop Landié • Marion and Mickaël invite you to try their range homemade sweets, waffles, chi-chis, ice cream and other treats. • Open for “la Morue en fête” festival and from June to August. • Esplanade de la Banche Phone : +33 (0) 6 60 36 16 64 • Festival Place aux Mômes. • From the 7th July to 20th of August • Each Tuesday at5:30 p.m. • Shows for kids (in French) : concerts, circuses, theater and so on. • Théâtre de Verdure • Place le Pomellec, EspaceJeunes • (Salle de l’Estran when it’s raining) • The Chapel of our Lady of Hope Built in 1850 by parishioners as an offering to the Virgin Mary after a cholera epidemic. This chapel was a place of pilgrimage for the fishermen and sailors that travelled to the cod fisheries off Iceland and Newfoundland. From this site, fishermen's wives watched the arrival of the boats back from the distant fisheries. The interior of the chapel houses a collection of offerings (ex-votos) left by the fishermen and their families. 15 10

  11. BE CURIOUS – DISCOVER OUR HERTIAGE BE CURIOUS – DISCOVER OTHER THINGS • Binic - Étables-sur-Mer and its rich maritime past • With a fleet of 37 ships fishing the waters off Newfoundland and Iceland, Binic - Étables-sur-Mer was considered the primary cod fishing port in France during the period from1845 to 1847. From the sixteenth century the sailors of Binic, in search of the cod fish, had been sailing the Atlantic Ocean to risk their lives in the cold waters of Iceland and Newfoundland. The cod fish (which was recognised then and still is for its benefits to bodily health) is still prepared in the traditional way by the company "Le Grand Léjon" in Binic. Every year during Ascension weekend the festival of “Morueen fete” is held to celebrate the epic journeys these fishermen made. • In the 1970's the port experienced a new development with the Shellfish Fishery. The reserve of shellfish of the Bay of Saint Brieuc has become today one of the most productive of the French coasts. At the height of that period, there were a hundred of shellfish trawlers anchored in Binic - Étables-sur-Mer out of 400 vessels operating on the Bay of Saint Brieuc. The port was bustling with the comings and goings of fishing boats. • This adventure would last twenty years until the creation of the computerized auction hall in Saint-Quay-Portieux in 1986. • Zooparc de Trégomeur • Experience Asia in the Côtes-d'Armor, with promise of a trip to the other side of the world. The industrialist from Versailles undertook the urbanisation of the village by building villas, beach huts, warm baths and roads leading to the beaches. By the beginning of 1900 18 villas had been built by Oscar Legris in Étables-sur-Mer. • Each of the villas was given a women’s name, the first letter of which followed the alphabet, Amélie to Solange. Although the villas were of different sizes, they follow an identical design. A beach hut was included in the rent of each villa. • Most of the villas are located on avenue Victoria, boulevard Legris and rue du Commandant Charcot In 1907 Oscar LEGRIS sold the land in front of the “plage des Godelins”, this would become the site of the Bellevue Hotel. After being occupied by the German Army during the 2nd World War, the hotel became a holiday camp. Today the hotel is privately owned and has been converted in to apartments. During the summer guided tours for children are organised so they can appreciate the grandeur of a bygone age. DID YOU KNOW? In 1910, a funicular railway project linking the villas and the beach was approved. But in the end, the plan was never implemented as it was considered that it would prove to be too expensive.
