  1. 05/09/12 - Dr. Block AIM: How do the electrons impact our world? Skills Addressed/Objective: - Compose Lewis Dot Diagrams for Ions - Compose Basic Ionic Formulas - Predict Nobel Gas electron configuration for the elements in an Ionic Compound Do Now: 1. Write the Lewis Dot Diagram for K, Mg, P and S 2. Write the Electron Configuration for 2 Nobel Gasses HW: #4-2: Finish the POGIL “Chemical Formulas and Names of Ionic Compounds” 05/11 - Quiz #4-2 (Lewis Structures, Ionic Formulas, Energy Relationship to bonding & Nobel Gas Electron Configurations of Ions)

  2. Revised on 05/07/12 For the weeks of 05/07 - 5/11 05/07 - Post Unit Exam Review, Identify Periodic Trends as they relate to Simple Ionic Formulas & Predict Ionic Formulas 05/08 - No Class 05/09 - Ionic Formulas, Nobel e-Config & Lewis Structures 05/10 - No Class 05/11 - Quiz & Lab - Ionic Bonding Announcements 05/11 - Quiz #4-2 (Lewis Structures, Ionic Formulas, Energy to bonding & Nobel Gas Electron Configurations of Ions)

  3. Today's Agenda - Go over DN ………..........…...................................…... 10 min - Note the Ionic Tendencies for Metals and Non Metals...................................................................… 10 min - Compose the Electron Configuration of the Metal and Non Metal Ions ..................................… 15 min - Compose Lewis Dot Diagrams for Metal and Non Metal Ions ……….................................................… 10 min - POGIL (Chemical Formulas and Their Name of Ionic Compounds ……............................................. 40 min - Closure …………….........................……………………. Balance

  4. Do Now Solution 1. Write the Lewis Dot Diagram for K, Mg, P and S 2. Write the Electron Configuration for 2 Nobel Gasses

  5. Metals vs. Non Metals

  6. Metals like to lose electrons and become cations. This will alter their electron configuration.

  7. Nonmetals (other than the Nobel Gasses) like to gain electrons and become anions. This will alter their electron configuration.

  8. - are the result of a complete transfer of electrons from a metal (cation) to a nonmetal (anion). - form compounds that take the shape of a crystal lattice. EX: NaCl Ionic Bonds http://web.jjay.cuny.edu/~acarpi/NSC/5-bonds.htm

  9. Sodium Chloride

  10. Rubidium Chloride Magnesium Sulfide Potassium Iodide Lithium Fluoride Lithium Bromide

  11. When Metals and Nonmetals gain or lose electrons, their electron configuration is altered and they now look like a Nobel Gas.

  12. When Metals and Nonmetals ionize, their Lewis Dot Structure is altered.

  13. Change this to be an activity for composing Lewis Dot Diagrams for Ions Fill in the missing information for the following Ionic Compounds

  14. POGIL - Chemical FOrmulas and Names of Ionic Compounds Portions from the exercise are on the next two slides

  15. Closure: Pass it on Ionic bonds __________________ ____________________________
