  2. Census Questionnaire and Topics • Combination of short form and long form • Short form: 12 individual topics and 6 household topics • Long form: (for 10% of total population) 28 individual topics and 17 household topics

  3. TraditionalRelease of Census Results • National press conference to release key results in less than 6 months after field enumeration • All 429 tabulations published in 18 months (with free access on NBS website)

  4. Joint Research Projects • Over 80 joint research projects contracted to universities and research institutes covering key demographic or social themes including fertility, mortality, migration, aging, urbanization, employment, population in relation to resources and environment

  5. Population Development Reports • A 35-volume population development reports entitled are compiled for enhancing the public awareness of population and development issues in contemporary China

  6. Customized Services • Customized services provided to government agencies, universities and research institutes by making of special tabulations or preparing analytical reports for policy making, disaster management and academic activities

  7. In-house Use of Micro Data • Facilities set up for in-house utilization of sample micro-data • Run on SAS or SPSS • Over 200 applications approved • User profile: researchers, teachers and students

  8. Conduct ofSeminars • Domestic seminars: focusing on improving methodology and on initial analysis on census results for policy-related issues • International seminar: sharing information on census methodology and results

  9. Census Data Online Analysis Toolkit • Pilot project with the World Bank • Analysis toolkit working on encrypted micro-data • User-defined on-line tabulation • Advanced communication and storage technology to ensure good response and high security

  10. Geo-spatial Presentation and Analysis • CensusInfo • Mapworld

  11. CensusInfo • Training conducted for national and provincial census offices • Data preparation completed for over 3000 counties and test run successful on stand-alone PC through CD-ROM • Problems encountered for dissemination through internet with new version of DeveInfo

  12. Mapworld • A pilot project with National Administration of Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformation, using Mapworld as the platform • Mapping and disseminating census results with real geo-information • Better Chinese language interface, hence more suitable for general public
