Chaotic Optional UWB Signal

This submission proposes including a chaotic signal source as an optional waveform in the IEEE 802.15.4a standard for Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs). The chaotic waveform is a low-cost and ultra-low-power signal source that can meet the technical requirements of the standard. The power consumption of devices in the standard must be efficient to support long battery life without frequent interventions.

  3. Objective • To include Chaotic signal source as an UWB optional waveform in the 802.15.4a standard • Chaotic waveform is an optional waveform in the standard baseline • Chaotic can be low cost and ultra-low power signal source that can satisfy the TG4a Technical Requirement • Power Consumption (From TG4a Technical Requirement) • -The device (complete communication system including alt-PHY and MAC) must operate while supporting a battery life of months or years without intervention. • -Therefore very efficient power saving modes are desirable, in particular for devices that transmit sporadically. In addition the coordination of nodes must not induce frequent wake up of nodes. These mechanisms must be supported by the alt-PHY layer. Jae-Hyon Kim (SAIT)

  4. Baseline • In March 2005, the baseline specification was selected (without enacting down-selection procedures) The baseline with 100% approval. • In the baseline, Chaotic waveform was determined as an optional waveform in UWB band • Chaotic waveform and SOP mechanisms for homogeneous (chaos-only) networks Jae-Hyon Kim (SAIT)

DEMOD LPF S/W Code2 Cross Correlator S/W RF Non-coherent Detector Chaotic Detector Jae-Hyon Kim (SAIT)

  7. PRI VPeak Ts TC Preamble Modulation & PRF Ternary Modulation, Peak Preamble PRF = ~ 31 MHz (actually ~ 494/16) TG4a Draft Ts =~ 2 nsec. => Chip duration ≈ 2 ns (2.024291 ns) -PRF of Chaotic pulse length(Ts) can be changed flexibly without altering the spectral shape or Band Plan Bit 1 Bit -1 => Bit 1 Bit 0 => 0 Chaotic Option 1 Unipolar Ts Ts =~ 30 nsec. Bit 1 => Ref & (+Ref) Bit -1 => Ref & (-Ref) Bit 0 => 0 Chaotic Option 2 Ternary Ts Ts =~ 30 nsec. Jae-Hyon Kim (SAIT)

  8. Data Modulation & PRF Ts = 32.4 ns S FEC+Modulation: RS+1/2CC+2PPM&BPSK or RS+3/4CC+8PPM&BPSK. Peak PRF: 494 MHz or 247 MHz. TG4a Draft Ex: Average Data PRF ~ 16 MHz, 1uS => 16 pulses Bit -1 => Bit 1 Bit 1 Chaotic Option 1 Unipolar Ts =~ 32 nsec. Ts Bit 1 => Ref & (+Ref) Bit -1 => Ref & (-Ref) Chaotic Option 2 Binary Ts =~ 32 nsec. Ts Jae-Hyon Kim (SAIT)

  9. Conclusion • Chaotic Source is a very low cost and low power signal generator • The Chaotic pulse length can be determined flexibly without altering the bandwidth => Chaotic Source can be included in the standard as an optional signal source in mandatory system => No modification is required in the scheme and parameters determined so far in TG4a for UWB band (impulse radio based preamble, PRF, modulation, and FEC) • Reference (Chaotic) • doc.: IEEE 15-05-0030-02-004a • doc.: IEEE 15-05-0132-03-004a • doc.: IEEE 15-05-0315-00-004a • doc.: IEEE 15-05-0316-00-004a • doc.: IEEE 15-05-0451-00-004a Jae-Hyon Kim (SAIT)
