  4. The Community of St Mark’s believes that every individual is created by God, and is precious to God. Each person is called to serve God and their neighbour and to fulfil their potential. 4

  5. How can parents support their child in KS4? • Communication is key. • Show an interest in their achievement. • School Gateway for reports, timetables, e mails and payments

  6. Talk about school day. • Talk about their dreams for the future.

  7. Keep in contact with the school. Read and sign the school diary every week. Attend parents’ evening, 21st May 2020 Discuss IPMs with your child and any targets set. Keep Form Tutor, PPL and school informed of any concerns.

  8. Expectations: • Excellent attendance. • Be self-motivated. • Ask for help if you do not understand. • Be organised with both work and time. • H/W completion. • Getting your priorities right.

  9. Homework • Have a copy of the homework timetable. • Suitable work space. • Find the right time to work for 1½- 3 hours a night. • Take breaks when studying.

St Mark's Catholic School • St Mark's Catholic School, in Bath Road, Hounslow • St Mark's holds on to the top spot in this year's Real Schools Guide and more impressively has gone from being the 68th best school nationwide in our rankings to the 17th. • It's latest Ofsted report was graded as 'Outstanding' and the school managed a top-rated five out of five stars clean sweep in our ratings for pupils' attainment, progress, attendance and outcomes. • The school's Progress 8 score was rated as a huge 1.15 (any number above 0 is positive), while just 3.8 per cent of sessions were missed by pupils. • Like The Heathland School, 97 per cent of pupils stayed on in education or went into employment or training after finishing their GCSEs.

  13. Examinations • No longer any Modular examinations, all are linear. • Very few controlled assessments. • Mock examinations 22nd June – 26th June. • All tests and mocks are important and require revision.

  17. What is the DofE Award?

  18. The DofE is… A DofE programme is a real adventure It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from You can do programmes at three levels: • Bronze(aged 14+) • Silver(aged 15+) • Gold(aged 16+) …which lead to a Duke of Edinburgh's Award.

The DofE is… You achieve an Award by completing a personal programme of activities in four sections: • Volunteering: undertaking service to individuals or the community • Physical: improving in an area of sport, dance or fitness activities • Skills: developing practical and social skills and personal interests • Expedition: planning, training for and completion of an adventurous journey in the UK or abroad

  21. Choosing activities There is a massive choice of activities that count towards DofE programmes. You can select practically any activity you want – as long as it’s legal and morally acceptable. • Activities are placed in specific sections for a reason. • You need to choose activities you are going to enjoy. • Activities could be something that you are already doing or perhaps one you’ve always wanted to try.

  22. Volunteering Aim • To inspire young people to make a difference within their communities or to an individual’s life and develop compassion by giving service to others.

  31. Expedition Aim • To inspire young people to develop initiative and a sense of adventure and discovery, by planning, training for and completing an adventurous journey as part of a team.

Benefits • Gain an appreciation of and respect for the outdoor environment. • Learn the value of sharing responsibility for success. • Learn the importance of attention to detail and organisational ability. • Develop and demonstrate enterprise and imagination. • Become more self-reliant. • Become more able to overcome challenges. • Recognise the needs and strengths of others. • Improve decision-making skills and the ability to accept consequences. • Gain skills to reflect on personal performance. • Learn to manage risk. • Learn through experience.

Important Dates 23rd Nov – First Aid training 18th Jan– Bronze Basic Navigation Field Exercise 25-26th April – Bronze Practice Weekend 13-14th June – Bronze Assessed Weekend These dates are set in stone, if you are not available for these dates then Bronze DofE is not a suitable option as all training exercises and practice weekends are compulsory before progressing on to the Assessed weekend.

  35. Approximate Associated Costs Participant's Registration fee: £35 First Aid Certification: £30 Practice Weekend : £ 45 Assessed Weekend : £ 50 Walking boots, Sleeping bag, Waterproof clothing approx £100 – 150 £260-£310
