News Stories USU student pleads guilty in fraternity hazing death March 11th, 2009 @ 10:47am LOGAN -- One of 12 Utah State University students charged in connection with the death of a classmate has entered a guilty plea. Grant Arthur Barney, 22, pleaded guilty to obstructing justice as part of a plea deal with prosecutors. In return other charges against him were dropped. Barney was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. In November one of the organization's pledges, Michael Starks, died after imbibing a lethal amount of alcohol. Prosecutors said his drinking was part of a hazing ritual. Ten other students still have charges pending against them. The Deseret News reports charges against another have been dropped. Junior high students hospitalized following prescription drug overdose March 10th, 2009 @ 6:45pm KAYSVILLE -- Two Davis Junior High students are in the hospital, and parents of another seven are being told they should be checked out too. It's after one of the students apparently passed out pills at school. Davis School District spokesman Chris Williams says a student who was new to the alternative school brought the prescription drugs to lunch. Teachers realized something was wrong almost right away. Williams says the students complained of feeling sick, and the symptoms showed it. "The students started acting lethargic, confused, dazed," he said. The symptoms were severe enough that school officials decided to have two of the students sent to Primary Children's Medical Center. "The parents of the seven remaining students were all notified and told that they should probably get their children checked out at Primary Children's as well," Williams said. A total of nine kids popped pills, but Williams couldn't say exactly what the pills were or how much each student took. Kaysville police are investigating. Williams says the incident is unprecedented in Davis County. Case managers for the district will now determine what to do with the new student since he was already attending the alternative school.
