  2. mercenary • A soldier who is paid to fight for a foreign country • About 18,000 Hessian mercenaries arrived in the Thirteen Colonies in 1776. The Hessians were Germans, and some were prisoners or debtors. They were famous for their military skill.

  3. minutemen • Colonists who stood ready to battle the British at a minute’s notice • Paul Revere was one of the minutemen. He was ready to hop on his horse and spread the word that the British soldiers were coming.

  4. militia • Another word for army • The Lexington militia members waited in formation to fight the British soldiers during the Battle of Lexington, the first skirmish of the Revolutionary War.

  5. siege • When an army makes a great effort to overpower or attack an enemy • George Washington led a siege that forced the British to leave Boston.

  6. rebellion • To openly attack an enemy with either words or weapons • King George III felt that the colonists were in rebellion against England.

  7. perseverance • Trying hard and not giving up • The minutemen and American militia would not have won against the British without perseverance.

  8. crucial • Extremely important • There were many crucial battles during the Revolutionary War.
