  2. Battle of Bunker Hill • 1775 • The British drive the Patriots from hill overlooking Boston, but suffer terrible losses.

  3. Battle of Long Island • 1776 • British drive Washington’s army out of New York.

  4. Battle of Trenton • 1776 • Washington’s troops cross the Delaware River at night, surprising the British and winning an inspiring victory.

  5. Battle of Saratoga • 1777 • Patriots defeat the British in northern New York, leading French to join war on American side. The battle is the turning point of the war.

  7. Ethan Allen • American Colonel • Led Vermont militia across Lake Champlain and surprised the British troops at Fort Ticonderoga in northern New York

  8. Gage • British General • Marched the troops at Breed’s Hill outside of Boston

  9. William Howe • British General • Ordered a third wave of attacks on Breed’s Hill • Forced the Patriot troops to retreat

  10. Henry Knox • American Colonel • Brought troops and cannons to Boston from Fort Ticonderoga

  11. John Burgoyne • British General • Moved out of Canada • 8,000 British, German, Loyalists, Canadians and Native Americans • Quickly recaptured Fort Ticonderoga and moved south through New York toward Albany
