2. Childhood and Young Adulthood • Anne was born March 8th 1702 (estimated) in Ireland • Father: An attorney, William Cormac • Mother: Williams maidservant • Anne was hidden as a child because it was not acceptable to raise an illegitimate child • Anne dressed as a boy, and pretend to be extended family throughout her childhood • Once William decided he wanted to live openly with his mistress, Anne was able to come out of hiding. • As Anne grew older she decided she didn’t want to fit the stereotypical women roll. • She married a young sailor with out a penny to his name, her father was furious. • She later left her husband for Captain John Rackham (Calico Jack)

3. Anne’s life continued… • After being smuggled abroad Captain Calico Jack’s ship dressed as a man, Anne became a ruthless and well known pirate, fighting side by side with the other crew members. • When Anne became pregnant, Calico Jack dropped her off in Cuba to stay with family friends, what happened to the baby is unknown, whether it died or was abandoned. • After giving birth Anne was reunited with Calico Jack • Once aboard the ship again, she met Mary Read • The two became great friends and partners in crime and were known and feared by many

4. Anne’s life continued…. • Late October 1720, while celebrating a victory, Calico’s ship was attacked by a British Fleet • Everyone on the boat was inebriated and useless besides for Anne Bonny and Mary Read, who tried to hold of the British as best they could • Of course they were eventually captured, after being surrounded by British sailors • The entire crew was sentenced to be executed, but Anne and Mary were able to escape their fate because they were both pregnant. • Instead both women were sent to jail, where Mary died from hay fever • What happened to Anne is still a mystery; some say her dad bailed her out of jail and she started her life over in the new world, while others say she escaped and lived out the rest of her life in the south of England.

5. Flag • Sense Anne Bonny, sailed on Captain Calico Jack’s ship she used his flag. • Calico Jack designed this flag himself • It’s a twist on the original “jolly roger” and has swords instead of bones

6. Ship • Anne Bonny sailed on Calico Jack’s ship, “The Treasure” • Calico Jack was named captain after a mutiny of the original captain Charles Vane

7. Every man shall obey civil command; the captain shall have on full share and a half in all prizes. the Master, Carpenter, Boatswain, and Gunner shall have one share and quarter. If any man shall offer to run away, or keep any secret from the Company, he shall be marroon'd with one bottle of powder, one bottle of Water, one small Arm, and shot. If any Man shall steal any Thing in the Company, or game, to the value of a piece of Eight, he shall be Marroon'd or shot. If at any Time we should meet at another Marrooner (that is, Pyrate) that man shall sign his Articles without Consent of our Company, shall suffer such Punishment as the Captain and Company shall think fit. That man that shall strike another, whilst these Articles are in force, shall receive Moses's Law (that is 40 Stripes lacking one) on the bare Back. 6. That Man that shall snap his Arms, or smoak Tobacco in the Hold, without cap to his Pipe, or carry a candle lighted without lanthorn, shall suffer the same Punishment as in the former Article. 7. That Man that shall not keep his Arms clean, fit for an Engagement, or neglect his Business, shall be cut off from his Share, and suffer such other Punishment as the Captain and Company shall think fit. 8. If any man shall lose a joint in time of Engagement, shall have 400 Pieces of Eight: if a limb, 800. 9. If at any time you meet with a prudent Woman, that Man that offers to meddle with her, without her Consent, shall suffer Death. Pirate Code of Conduct

8. Associations with other pirates? • Mary Read • Another women on Calico Jacks ship • The too became fast friends and were known for their ruthlessness • When Captain Rackham's ship was taken over the two women were not executed and because they were both pregnant, so they were sent to jail • Read later died in jail from hay fever • Captain John Rackham (Calico Jack) • Anne left her husband and ran off with Calico Jack, who smuggled her aboard his ship dressed as a man. • The two traveled the world, and fought side by side for many years before their capture.

9. Pirating Activities • Caused most trouble in the Caribbean areas especially; but any ships in the area were also a possibility • They sailed up and down the Caribbean, tormenting all who stood in their way • Calico Jack was a big spender who would spend his riches just as soon as he could get his hands on them • While Anne had quite a temper which proved to make her as ruthless and as good of a pirate as any other man

10. Rumors of Anne Bonny • It is rumored that Anne killed a servant who angered her during her youth • It has also been rumored that Anne Bonny and Mary Read were lovers, and escaped jail to go raise their children together • It is also rumored that Anne was pardoned because another pirate Captain Roberts, threaded to attach Port Royal
