  1. VHMPID R&D ACTIVITY on 2012 gdc bari infn

  2. The region below 10 GeV/c • Strong interest in particle identification • Many not well understood differences between baryons and mesons, strange and not-strange etc. • We need p,k,p ALICE (QM 2011, preliminary) STAR (published, 2007) gdc bari infn pT (GeV/c)

  3. The region between 10-20 GeV/c • Moderate interest in particle identification • Data contradictory, particle differences small • We need mostly excellent resolution in p-p separation • in pp: will resolve fragmentation function ambiguities ALICE (QM 2011, preliminary) STAR (QM 2009, preliminary) gdc bari infn

  4. Arguments for track by track physics • Jet specific hadro-chemistry predictions (e.g. Sapetaet al.) • To distinguish specific energy loss models • To measure the medium properties through jet modification • Particle composition of jets in vacuum and in medium measure medium properties not only through ratios but also through angular distributions and momentum distributions • Preliminary results on leading particle dependencies (K. Kaulder (STAR @ QM 11)) • Resolve decade old questions of quark quantum number tracking in jet fragmentation (strangeness, baryon number, charge, etc.) • Are the leading hadrons of a fragmenting quark-antiquark pair in the same jet or in opposing jets (rapidity gap measurements). • Is the hadro-chemistry in a gluon jet different than in a quark jet gdc bari infn

  5. VHMPID R&D activity • Recent results of QM2011 conference suggest to revisits the physics contribution the VHMPID can provide; • Nevertheless In Three transverse momentum regions below 10 , between 10 and 20 GeV/c and above 20, a refined PID still remain very important; • To push down the VHMPID capability below 10 GeV/c (RAA measurements) an increase of the gaseous Cherenkov radiator pressure (up to 2-3 bar) to increase the refractive index is a possible solution; • Simulations are already under way; • There is a R&D activity list for the 2012, with contributions from different institutions (Mexico, Hungry, CERN, Korea, Bari); a sub set for the Bari competence is in the spare slide. • From that list, due to the specific competences of the Bari group, the pressurized vessel study is then the contribution that would permit to continue this important R&D activity aiming for matching the VHMPID transverse momentum range to the region of interest (5-10 GeV/c) • I have extracted from a list this specific study to test a pressurized radiator vessel (C4F10 or C3F8O) will let then to enhance the VHMPID performance in the momentum region below 10 GeV/c gdc bari infn

  6. Gas rack instrumentation • A first cost estimate for a gas rack instrumentation based on a CERN gas group experience is of the order of 25 KCHF gdc bari infn

  7. SPARE SLIDEBari VHMPID R&D contributions • These might be the Bari-related VHMPID R&D items for 2012: • In general: radiator gas and gas system questions, cooling,beam-tests, simulations. • In detail:1) Radiator-gas pre-cleaning system:   Design, construction, installation, commissioning.   The task includes the control and DAQ HW and SW. • 2) Modification of the existing radiator gas system to test   pressurized radiator vessels (up to 2-3 bar) • 3) Sonar gas-quality check system*:   Design, construction, installation, commissioning.   The task includes the control and DAQ HW and SW. • 4) First estimation of cooling needs and possible solutions • 5) First estimation of the services that could/should be installed   during the 2013 shutdown (gas supplies, cooling) • 6) Possible modifications of the radiator gas transparency system   based on the experience obtained in 2011. • 7) Participation in beam-test activity at CERN. • 8) Simulation of different VHMPID geometry arrangements. • 9) Development of VHMPID-specific reconstruction algorithms. gdc bari infn
