  1. Chapter 9 Study Guide: Acids and Bases Directions: Answer these problems on binder paper. We will have class time to work on this on Wednesday and Thursday. Describe the concentrations of hydronium and hydroxide ions in acidic solutions. Describe the concentrations of hydronium and hydroxide ions in basic solutions. Describe the concentrations of hydronium and hydroxide ions in neutral solutions. What is the difference between solute and solvent? Give an example of a solution and identify the solute and solvent. Look at figure 8 on page 387. At what temperature does 400 grams of sucrose dissolve in 100g of water? Look at figure 8 on page 387. At what temperature are the solubilities of potassium chloride and sodium chloride the same? Why is knowing the pH scale important to life outside of 8th grade science? Look at figure 26 on page 403. Which indicator can be used at a pH of 10? Look at figure 26 on page 403. At what pH values does Thymol blue produce a color change? At what pH values does blue litmus paper turn red? At what pH values does red litmus paper turn blue? How does pH paper work? Tums and Pepto-bismol are used to help when your stomach gets upset. Are these remedies acids or bases? Draw a pH scale. Label: 1 – 14, acid, base, pure water, mystery A (pH 5.4), mystery B (pH 11.2), mystery C (pH 8) A solution is 5% NaOH. How many Liters of NaOH are in an 11 Liter sample of the solution? What concentration (in g/L) is created when you add 5 grams of salt, NaCl, to water? You end up with 75 Liters of solution.
