  2. Health and wellness • Health is the state of well-being in which all of the components of health are in balance. • Wellness is broken down into 6 major categories. • To be truly healthy; you must take care of all 6 components.

  3. The 6 components of health • Physical • Social • Environmental • Emotional • Spiritual • Intellectual/Mental

  4. Physical health • Refers to the way that your body functions. This includes: • *Eating Right • *Regular Exercise • *Being at recommended body weight • *Avoiding Drugs and Alcohol • *Being free of disease and sickness

  5. Social health • The quality of your relationships with friends, family, teachers and other that you are in contact with.

  6. Environmental health • Keeping your air and water clean, your food safe and the land around you enjoyable and safe.

  7. Emotional health • Expressing your feelings and emotions in a positive, nondestructive way.

  8. Spiritual health • Maintaining harmonious relationships with other living things and having spiritual direction and purpose. This includes living according to one’s ethics, morals, and values.

  9. Intellectual/mental health • The ability to recognize reality and cope with the demands of daily life.

  10. Wellness and optimal health • Wellness is achievement of a person’s best in all 6 components of health. • If one is weak; it can affect your overall health. • It is unrealistic to have complete wellness all of the time • The more healthy behaviors you choose the better off you will be at achieving optimal health.
