  1. Faxing Your Resume:The Case of Techie Terry Mr. Stephen Schroder WBL Coordinator Capital Region High School

  2. Finding A Job • Techie Terry wanted to find a job. • However, Techie Terry thought with all the technology these days that sending his resume by snail mail was ridiculous. • So Techie Terry asked Mr. Schroder whether it was okay to fax his resume to prospective employers.

  3. Mr. Schroder’s Response • Mr. Schroder told Techie Terry that it was okay to fax his resume, but there were some things that Terry should know beforehand.

  4. Advantages Of Faxing Your Resume • SPEED: If a prospective employer is in a rush to hire someone, this can be especially important.

  5. Advantages Of Faxing Your Resume(continued) • CONVENIENCE: Even with prospective employers who aren’t in a rush, faxing them your resume can make their lives much easier. For example, if a faxed resume is in response to a particular need of a prospective employer, this will reduce the prospective employer’s need to look through its files for candidates that are a good fit for the job.

  6. Advantages Of Faxing Your Resume(continued) • INGENUITY: Some employers may grant you an interview based on the fact that faxing them your resume shows ingenuity and a comfort on your part with using technology.

  7. Disadvantages Of Faxing Your Resume • APPEARANCE: Although the appearance of fax transmissions continues to improve, some faxes still are lacking in eye appeal.

  8. Disadvantages Of Faxing Your Resume (continued) • INAPPROPRIATE USE: Unlike a letter, a fax is intrusive, literally pouring onto the lap of the employer receiving it. If used in the right way, faxes are extremely time efficient; if used in the wrong way, they can be annoying and even rude.

  9. So What Should Techie Terry Do? • The answer is pretty straightforward: be polite and use common sense. • Follow the tips on the next few slides.

  10. Tips • Don’t send an unsolicited fax. Contact the organization you’re interested in ahead of time and request the fax numbers and contact names that are appropriate for your submission.

  11. Tips (continued) • Ensure that the right person will see your resume; fax your resume with a cover letter introducing it.

  12. Tips (continued) • Proper etiquette is vital. Being polite pays in every aspect of the job search. Don’t fax a lot of documents, or lengthy writing samples, recommendation letters, etc.; you don’t want to tie up the organization’s fax machine, and you don’t want to appear arrogant.

  13. Tips (continued) • Follow-up a fax of your resume with a hard copy of it. This will help ensure that your resume gets to the appropriate person and that the organization has a clean, legible resume of yours to circulate. This type of follow-up on your part will reinforce your name with the prospective employer and gives you the chance to send any additional materials.
