  3. Letter from a Patriot soldier

  4. Patriots It’s January 5, 1778. Patriots, you have lost Philadelphia, one of the most important cities in the colonies, to the Redcoats. You are tired and hungry, and it has started to snow again. Your shoes wore out last November, and you have not been able to replace them. You wrap torn cloth around your feet and wince as you leave bloody footprints in the snow from your cracked and bleeding feet. Three days ago, you watched one of your best friends die from a fever and hunger. What are you going to do? Choose from one of the following: 1. Try making shoes and clothing out of material that you can scrounge up from around camp. 2. Try to build a better hut for shelter against the cold and snow. 3. Go out and try foraging for food in the woods. Write down your decision after you circle the number!

  5. Patriots who chose NUMBER 1 Roll your Common sense number to see if you can make better clothes and shoes for yourself. You can only roll ONCE. No cheating! 

  6. Patriots who chose NUMBER 1 • If you roll a number higher than your Common Sense number, your Morale goes down by one point. Unfortunately, you don’t know how to sew or cobble shoes, so you just sit in the snow looking confused. • If you roll your Common Sense number or lower, you are able to make better clothes for yourself and feel a bit warmer. Raise your Morale by 1.

  7. Patriots who chose NUMBER 2 • If you chose to try to build a better hut, roll your Military Expertise number to see if you remember how to build an army hut for shelter.

  8. Patriots who chose NUMBER 2 • If you roll a number higher than your Military expertise number, you are unsuccessful. Try as you might, you can’t remember how to use the proper tools to build your hut. The cold has numbed your mind. Lower your Morale by 1. • If you roll your Military Expertise number or lower, you build an excellent, warm hut out of supplies found around the camp. Raise your Morale by 1.

  9. Patriots who chose NUMBER 3 • If you decided to go foraging for food, roll your Stamina number to see if you’re able to endure the cold long enough to find food.

  10. Patriots who chose NUMBER 3 • If you spin a number higher than your Stamina number, lower your Morale by 1. You venture out into the woods to forage for food but return with an empty basket and an empty stomach. • If you spin a number lower than your Stamina number, raise your Morale by 1. You return with just enough food to fill your stomach. Yum!

  11. Loyalists It’s January 5, 1778. Loyalists, you are enjoying the warmth and party atmosphere of Philadelphia during the winter of 1777 – 78. Choose one of the following: 1. Accept an invitation from General Charles Cornwallis to a formal ball. 2. Go shopping for some better clothes and a nice beaver hat to keep your ears warm. 3. Read the news about how the rebels are either being defeated or in hiding all through the colonies.

  12. Loyalists who chose NUMBER 1 • Roll the dice to see what will happen to you at General Charles Cornwallis’ ball.

  13. Loyalists who chose NUMBER 1 • If you roll you’re a number HIGHER than your Common Sense number, you have a wonderful time at the ball and even get to talk to General Cornwallis himself for a time. He calls you a good friend. Raise your Morale by 1. • If you roll your Common Sense number or lower, you find that the party has a delicious feast! You eat until you are almost too stuffed to move. You rise from the table to greet General Cornwallis and spill juice all over your crisp white clothes! General Cornwallis thinks it’s funny, but now you have to walk around with a large stain down your shirt for the entire evening. Raise your Morale by 1.

  14. Loyalists who chose NUMBER 2 • Roll the dice to see how your STAMINA will affect your shopping trip.

  15. Loyalists who chose NUMBER 2 • If you roll you’re a number HIGHER than your Stamina number, you find the perfect outfit while shopping. Raise your Morale by 1. • If you roll your Stamina number or lower, you find out that the shop is completely out of beaver fur hats! Crestfallen, you choose instead to buy a raccoon fur hat. Your ears are toasty warm, but your head is completely out of style. Raise your Morale by 1.

  16. Loyalists who chose NUMBER 3 • Roll the dice to see how your MILITARY EXPERTISE will affect your morning.

  17. Loyalists who chose NUMBER 3 • If you roll a number HIGHER than your Military Expertise number, discuss the good news with General Cornwallis. He is so impressed with your knowledge that he promises to promote you soon! Raise your Morale by 1 • If you roll your Military Expertise number or lower, you spill the most delicious cup of coffee you have ever tasted all over the paper by accident. Still, you are able to read just enough of the now soggy paper to enjoy the victorious news. Raise your Morale by 1.

  18. Dear Diary… Using the decisions and results of those decisions, write a journal entry. Follow the appropriate prompt. Remember, write from the perspective of YOUR CHARACTER. Be creative and make it a story!
