  2. The South • The Northern campaign is done after Saratoga • Britain focuses on the South--loyalists • France, Poland, Spain, Germany are now helping the colonists

  3. Treaty of Paris, 1783 1. United States is an independent country 2. US boundaries • West to the Mississippi River, North to the Great Lakes, Florida to the South 3. Each side pays prewar debt • Britain returns captured slaves • Loyalists are paid back land lost during war

  4. So…. • A new country is formed • 25,000 colonial deaths, 10,000 British deaths • This new country starts out in tremendous debt—does this sound familiar??
