  2. New Reconstruction Plan • Proposed by Andrew Johnson • Relaxed plan • Had no help from legislators

  3. 13th Amendment • Approved December 1865 • Abolished slavery and forced labor • Had to be ratified by each state • Angered Southerners • Led to black codes • Laws that tried to put African Americans back into a system that was like slavery

  4. Congress Against Johnson • Did not like Johnson’s Reconstruction plan • Did not want Southern senators and representatives back in congress • Did not want Confederates gaining control of South • Needed to protect freedmen and get them the right to vote

  5. 14th Amendment • 1866-Civil Rights Act passed: gave African Americans citizenship and civil rights • Johnson vetoed the act, but passed • 14th amendment created to make sure the Courts could not take away the civil rights act • Approved in 1868

  6. Radical Reconstruction • Harsher form due to violence against African Americans • 1867-Reconstruction Act- removed Southern governments that didn’t approve the 14th amendment • New state constitutions for Southern States to be let back into the Union

  7. Radical Reconstruction • Active role in politics from African Americans • 16 African Americans served in House of Reps (1872-1901) • 2 served in the Senate • Southern states opened public schools • Women were given property rights

  8. Radical Reconstruction • Republican party grows • Radicals try to impeach Pres. Johnson • Not enough votes for impeachment, 1 short

  9. Election of 1868 • Ulysses S. Grant- Republican party • Moderate • Won majority of states

  10. 15th Amendment • Approved 1870 • Gave African Americans the right to vote • Did not stop voting requirements • Property • Voting tax

  11. Ku Klux Klan • Secret Society • First threatened, then violence • Congress passed two acts to stop the violence • Eventually disbanded, was restarted in the 1900s
