  1. The Present Tense of Stem-Changing Verbs: eie, ei, oue

  2. STEM changers undergo changes in their stem when conjugated in the present tense. These changes occur in all the forms except nosotros/as. These changes do notaffectthe endings we have learned for our conjugations. THEY AFFECT ONLY THE STEM When you draw line is drawn around the forms that change, the shape resembles a boot So they are sometimes informally called “boot” verbs. There are three types or classes of “boot” verbs.

  3. Type 1: e  ie Entender =to understand entiendo entiendes entiende entendemos entienden entender

  4. querer quiero quieres quiere queremos quieren When used with a thing as the direct object, querer means to want. When used with a person as the direct object, querer means to love

  5. Here are some other common e ie verbs: empezar, comenzar to begin pensar (+ infinitive) to think; to plan (to do something) perder to lose preferir to prefer querer to want( thing) to love( someone ) cerrar to close

  6. tener, venir The verbs tener and venir are what might be called partial stem-changing verbs; the yo forms do not have the stem change, but they do have an irregularity. tengo tienes tiene tenemos tienen vengo vienes viene venimos vienen I call these stem changing GO verbs

  12. Here are some other common o ue verbs: dormir to sleep encontrar to find poder to be able; can recordar to remember to return, to come back ( place ) volver

  13. Type 4: u  ue( sub type of O to UE) The verb jugar, to play (games or sports), follows the same pattern as o  ue verbs, but the change is u  ue. juego juegas juega jugamos juegan jugar

  14. More o to ue verbs consolar to console contar to count demostrar to demonstrate envolver to wrap soltar to let go volar to fly soñar to dream

  15. How do you know what letter to change ? It is the second to last vowel that gets stem changed. For example: Preferir : Prefiero Prefieres Prefiere Preferimos Prefieren
