  1. The Underdogs by Mike Lupica

  2. Genre:Realistic FictionSetting:Forbes, PA

  3. Conflict:The city cannot afford to have a youth football league, so Will has to figure out a way to come up with the money in order to keep the team.

  4. Plot:The city of Forbes, PA is broke and the city can no longer afford to have a youth football league for middle school players. Will Tyler loves football and wants them to have a season, so he comes up with a plan to keep the season from being cancelled. He puts together a team of only 11 players and does everything he can in order to make it to the championship game.

  5. Main Characters: Will Tyler – The narrator of the story. He loves football and will do anything to keep the city’s youth football league alive.Joe Tyler – Will’s dad. He becomes the coach of Will’s football team.Hannah Grayson – A new girl that just moved to the city. She wants to play on the boy’s football team.Tim Leblanc – Will’s best friend. He doesn’t want Hannah to play on their team.Toby Keenan – A friend of Will’s. Will wants him to play on the team because he is big and strong.

  6. Who might enjoy this book? I think anyone who is a fan of football would like this book. Also, anyone who likes to cheer for the “underdog” would like this book.

  7. Recommendation I recommend that others read this book because it is very inspirational. Even if you don’t know everything there is to know about football, you still might enjoy this book because it gives you something to cheer for and to believe in. I like this book because it has a good message about never giving up on your dreams.

  8. My Favorite Passage from the Book “Before you go, just honestly answer one question for me,” she said. “Do you, Will the Thrill, think I’m good enough to make the team?” Even though it was just the two of them, nobody else in sight, Will gave a quick look around. ‘Yeah,” he said. “I think you’d be good enough.” “So why can’t I play on a team that needs players?” “You’re gonna make me come out and say it, right?” Will said. She nodded. “You can’t play because you’re a girl.” Now Hannah Grayson stood up, close to him, up in his space, maybe to show him she really was taller. Then she casually reached out and knocked his ball out of his hands. As she walked away, she looked over her shoulder and said, “You’re the girl.” (Page 104)

  9. Song Connection I chose to connect Justin Bieber’s song, “Never Say Never” to this book because in the song, Justin sings about how he will never say never to anything and that even if he gets knocked down, he won’t stay down for long. This song reminds me of how Will Tyler lived his life. Anytime someone told him he couldn’t do something in the book, he always found a way to make it happen. He never said never.
