  2. Follow these steps: 1. Label: rate, time, distance 2. Plug into formula: distance = rate X time or rate = distance/time time = distance/time 3. 3. Change time to hours, minutes, or seconds as needed (to change time to hours, divide by 60). 4. Solve formula

  3. TIME We need to be at the movies in 30 minutes. If the theater is 25 miles away, how fast will we need to travel? Distance = rate x time Rate = Distance/time Change the time to hours: TIME: 30 min = .5 hour Rate = 25 miles/.5 hours Rate = 50 miles per hour WE NEED RATE DISTANCE

  4. What is the speed or rate of a ship that travels 408 miles in 12 hours? 1.Label: Distance: 408 miles Rate: ? Time: 12 hours 2. Formula: Rate = 408/12 Rate = 34 mph Rate = Distance/Time

  5. The South (during the Civil War) rode the HL Hunley submarine in the ocean for 3 hours at a speed of 22 miles per hour. How far did the submarine travel? Distance = Rate x Time Distance = 22 mph x 3 hrs Distance = 66 miles

  6. A garden snail moves about 6 inches in 2 minutes. What is its speed in inches per minute? Distance = Rate x Time Rate = Distance/Time Rate = 6 inches / 2 minutes Rate = 3 inches per minute

  7. Our family went to Florida by airplane. We flew at a rate of 425 miles per hour for 3 hours. How many miles did we fly? Distance = Rate x Time Distance = 425 mph x 3 hrs Distance = 1,275 miles

  8. On spring break, John rode the cruise ship to Mexico for 8 hours at a rate of 30 miles per hour. How far did the cruise ship travel? 300 miles 240 miles
