In 2004, in San Francisco, California at a dinner party, one group of people met and came up with an exciting new idea for a website.2 • Former PayPal employees Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim met and came up with an idea for a new video-sharing website.2 • This website was registered in 2005 under the domain name www.YouTube.com.2 How YouTube Came To Be

In a press conference in 2006, Jawed Karim released that he got his ideas for YouTube from 2 different events: • Karim felt that peoples videos of these events should be able to be seen by people all over the world in a fast way. • One event that gave Karim his idea was after Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction after the 2004 Super bowl halftime show.3 • Another event that gave Karim his idea was after the 2004 tsunami that hit Sumatra of the coast of Indonesia in the Indian Ocean.3 The Idea for YouTube

  5. In a couple months after its creation in 2005, YouTube was already becoming extremely popular. It was getting around 65,000 video views a month.4 • In the year 2013, YouTube’s video views have reached 1 billion views per month. By now, virtually everyone on Earth has heard of YouTube.4 YouTube’s Rise to Fame

  6. In September 2005, YouTube got its first 1 million view hit. It was a Nike ad that went viral.4 • In December 2012, YouTube got its first 1 billion view video. Gangnam Style was a Kpop dance song that took the world by storm.4 • Today, Gangnam Style still sits atop the most viewed YouTube video of all time with a little over 2 billion views. Since then, there is also another video on YouTube that has also reached 1 billion views.4 Popular Videos 1

  8. 1 YouTube Subscribe Button • The YouTube subscribe button has let people follow their favorite Youtubers to see all the videos they post to YouTube. This button has led to billions of people to use YouTube.

YouTubers Net Worth • Millions of people use YouTube daily and upload videos all the time.5 • Some of the really popular Youtubers like PewDiePie can make a lot of money through YouTube’s ads on their videos.5 • In 2013, it was estimated that with PewDiePie’s 30 million subscribers that he is worth $10 million dollars.5

  10. With all the traffic on YouTube daily, their servers need constant maintenance and improvement. YouTube teamed up with IBM and their new 8-way UNIX server that is cheaper and has a lot more power to keep up with all the traffic on YouTube.6 6 Increased YouTube Servers with IBM
