  1. Session 2 – WISE SoE TCM data processing and quality issues

  2. Session 2 – Objective & Guiding Questions • Objective: • To clarify the WISE SoE TCM processing phase & indicator • aggregation steps; to discuss specific QA/QC issues on raw & • indicator data; to identify challenges and opportunities to improve • QA/QC and data coverage/use • Guiding questions: • Processing phase raw data & responsabilities clear? • Opportunities for improvement?Eionet & EEA • Aggregation phase & data needs clear? • Specific QA/QC issues (raw & aggregated): Primary key values; • RSC duplicates; Stations Id´s and mapping WFD; Data • resubmission & recoding; Building trends; Waterbody types

  3. Session 2 - Main topics from questionnaires • Difficulties with reporting process (Data Dictionaries; Validation Rules) and better clarification on changes • “ICES reporting” – avoiding duplications • Other Regional Sea Conventions & Eionet reporting: BSC & UNEP-MAP • Updates on DD (Eionet reporting) vs ICES reporting • Earlier publication of DD changes • Feedback on QA/QC - using email & CDR • Ways to simplify overall process (e.g. Merging DD´s)? • XML (through Access tool) and excel reporting

  4. Session 2 – WISE SoE TCM data processing and quality issues Summary

  5. Session 2 - Main topics from questionnaires • Difficulties with reporting process (Data Dictionaries; Validation Rules) and better clarification on changes • “ICES reporting” – avoiding duplications • Other Regional Sea Conventions & Eionet reporting: BSC & UNEP-MAP • Updates on DD (Eionet reporting) vs ICES reporting • Earlier publication of DD changes • Feedback on QA/QC - using email & CDR • Ways to simplify overall process (e.g. Merging DD´s)? • XML (through Access tool) and excel reporting

  6. Session 2 – Main discussion points • Countries present: GE, CY, FI, CR, NO, LT, SE, BE, UK, PT • Chari: J. Jensen, reporters: N. Green, M.Peterlin • Processing phase raw data & responsabilities clear? • Feedback is very helpful and it could be used more in the work of MS. It is preferred that feedbacks are delivered via e-mails, but the system has to follow the process via notifications. Link between notification system and e-mail feedback should be done. • Contact lists should be updated every year. That is one of the responsibility of NFPs. • Opportunities for improvement?Eionet & EEA • DD – semiautomatic control is being used by HR and they find it very useful. The system enables the control of the data before submission. The list of elements with LVs could be included in the system • When data are submitted to Eionet, the master (nominal) coordinates are used. In submission to ICES, the actual coordinates are being used and linked to master coordinates when possible with a MS defined range. The acceptable range for combining the coordinates could be assigned, but it should be smaller for coastal waters than for marine waters.

  7. Session 2 – Main discussion points • Comparison of master and real stations coordinates should be done in 2013, the system for the future reporting should be improved in order to solve this problem by adding necessary fields. • Duplicates are a problem, most of all in comparison of ICES and Eionet data. Data should not go to both sources, because it is difficult to identify duplicates. EEA to follow up • Links to latest assessments, indicators and other products should be circulated by EEA to member states in a more strategic way; • Maps seem to be static images , proposal is to make maps more idynamic using Google map background; the process is ongoing in the EEA, some of the maps are already interactive; • EEA should use open source programmes for data sharing;

  8. Session 2 – Main discussion points • Aggregation phase • Data aggreegation for the CSI on nutrients & chlorophyl and HS are put for discussion. • Introduce data filtering overviews into the feedback; • Take home issues: • Build a better bridges to RSC to link data processing (e.g. Linking Eionet DD to ICES, more tailored and timley feedback;)
