What is the database template l.jpg
What is the Database Template?

The database template is a reusable set of tables and fields used to store data collected for the NPS Inventory & Monitoring Program.

What?

Where?

When?

Who?

Database Template: Concept

study tables

  • The study tables are specific to a single field study

  • This data expands on the question: what was observed

  • These tables will not change, once created for a particular study

  • These tables may go away as more coordination occurs

  • The protocol tables are common to a study group or protocol

  • This data answers the question: what was observed

  • These tables will develop over time as more coordination occurs among field biologists

  • The core tables contain data common to all data collection studies

  • This data answers the questions: where and when

  • These tables are static; they never change

New implementation for 2003:

The individual freshwater fish study tables are being combined to create a single regional freshwater fish database.

Database template central ak l.jpg

Utilized a database from Alaska Dept of Fish & Game

Recorded count of fish per species and life stage

Several compatibility issues with data vs. mdb

Database Template: Central AK

Database template southwest ak l.jpg

Biologist worked with a database developer to create a model customized to fit the data being collected

Recorded fish count per species

Recorded present life stages

Recorded fork lengths per fish

Database Template: Southwest AK

Database template data model l.jpg

Fish biologists from the Central and Southwest Alaska Networks met with an inventory coordinator and database developers to design a regional freshwater fish database

A model was created that accommodated both data collection protocols

New implementation for 2003:

Essentially, the study and protocol tables are merging for freshwater fish.

Database template field forms l.jpg

Field forms were developed to correspond with the new regional data model

The field forms match the data entry forms and allow for easy transfer of data into electronic format

  • Collaborate: Two heads are better than one

    • Think “Regionally”

    • Bring the field-area experts together for a combine effort

    • Design a single database that can be shared for similar protocols

  • Coordinate: Don’t reinvent the wheel

    • Take advantage of the database template or existing databases and tools

    • These concepts work outside of I&M
