  1. ADOLESCENCE DMITRY SIM

  2. INTRODUCTION Adolescence is kind of like a patch of ground covered by ant lion holes. Unwary teenagers can’t help but walk by lots of “ant lion" holes. If they get too close, they will slip down the edge just as the ant did. A few may be able to tread around the edges of one of the pitfalls and scurry out. Some, though, will be trapped-they will slip down the slope and be consumed by the hidden gaping jaws of drug usage, promiscuous or perverted sex, of other abuse. Dan Brewster Dan Brewster and Brian Brewster, The Lessons of Kilimanjaro, (Penang, Malaysia:2010), 18-19.

  3. Stuck in the Middle Biologically, adolescent behavior is explained in terms of the physical changes. Psychologically, adolescent behavior is explained in terms of changes in thinking and feeling (personality development). Socially, adolescent behavior is explained as a response to a marginal status in society. James E. Hightower Jr., ed. Caring for People from Birth to Death, (NY: Haworth Pastoral Press, 1999), 48-55.

  4. Stuck in the Middle Social tasks that adolescents strive to accomplish: • Forming new & more mature relationships w/age-mates of both sexes. • Achieving a masculine or feminine social role. • Accepting one’s physique & using the body effectively. • Achieving emotional independence from parents & other adults. James E. Hightower Jr., ed. Caring for People from Birth to Death, (NY: Haworth Pastoral Press, 1999), 52-53.

  5. Stuck in the Middle • Selecting & preparing for an occupation. • Preparing for marriage & family life. • Desiring & achieving socially responsible behavior. • Acquiring a set of values & an ethical system as a guide to behavior. James E. Hightower Jr., ed. Caring for People from Birth to Death, (NY: Haworth Pastoral Press, 1999), 53.

  6. SEX BEHAVIOR Study on sexual behaviors such as hand-holding and cuddling among young adolescents found that biological maturation was only one factor in whether of not such activities occurred. Regarding sex-related impulses, some experts believe that boys are more influenced by hormones and girls by culture. Kathleen Stassen Berger, The Developing Person Through the Life Span, 8th ed. (NY : Worth Publishers, 2011), 394.

  7. SEX BEHAVIOR - If a pregnant girl is under 16, she is more likely to experience complications-including spontaneous and induced abortion, high blood pressure, stillbirth, preterm birth, and low-birthweight newborns. - Babies born to young parents (17 or 18) have a higher rates of medical, educational, and social problems lifelong. • Another consequences are poverty, lack of education, younger teenagers often postpone prenatal care, adolescents are less likely to provide needed responsive mothering. Kathleen Stassen Berger, The Developing Person Through the Life Span, 8th ed. (NY : Worth Publishers, 2011), 397.

  8. HAZARDS Tobacco Alcohol Marijuana Suicide • Consequences • of • premarital relationships

  9. HAZARDS Data from the Philippine Health Statistics show that the incidence of suicide among Filipino males increased from 0.23 to 3.59 per 100,000 between 1984 and 2005. Similarly, rates rose from 0.12 to 1.09 per 100,000 in females. Among females, suicide rates were highest in the 15-24 year-old bracket, while rates were similar in all age groups for males. Philippine Council for Health Research and Development, Suicides on the rise? How to put breaks on them, June 11, 2012. http://www.pchrd.dost.gov.ph/index.php/2012-05-23-07-46-36/2012-05-24-00-03-06/5031-suicides-on-the-rise-how-to-put-breaks-on-them. Feb.1,2013

  10. FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS Adolescence is often characterized as a period of waning adult influence, when children distance themselves from the values of their elders. There is validity, but it is not always accurate. The fact that parent-adolescent relationships are pivotal does not mean that they are peaceful. Disputes are common because the adolescent’s drive for independence clashes with the parents’ desire to maintain control. Kathleen Stassen Berger, The Developing Person Through the Life Span, 8th ed. (NY : Worth Publishers, 2011), 437-438.

  11. FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS • COMMUNICATION • Do family members talk openly with one another? • SUPPORT • Do they rely on one another? • CONNECTEDNESS • How emotionally close are they? • CONTROL • Do parents encourage or limit adolescent autonomy? Kathleen Stassen Berger, The Developing Person Through the Life Span, 8th ed. (NY : Worth Publishers, 2011), 439.
