Challenges to implement mhealth in EAC • Mobile phone ownership (Personal Telephone) • Poor mobile phone network signal and internet connectivity • Limited financial resources to implement mHealth Technology projects • Difficulties in phone’s battery charging • Phone maintenance • Privacy issues • Data, storage, security and protection • Low technology literacy (Unfamiliarity with phone’s features) • Illiteracy for reading text-message 7th East African Health & Scientific Conference (EAHSC 2019) 5/7

  11. Discussion • The findings of the review elucidated a disparity in Mobile Health Technology uptake across EAC states • Most of included studies were from Kenya and Uganda and it show a great progress compared to other States members • Determining the effectiveness of mHealth intervention is with importance, less trials were conducted though they provide high evidence • Most mHealth studies focused on HIV and not much on other health priorities, this show the necessity of new mHealth project not only targeting HIV • Access to individual telephone, network, limited resources, illiteracy still challenges in mHealth. Multisectoral collaboration is with importance. 6/7 7th East African Health & Scientific Conference (EAHSC 2019)

  12. Conclusion • New mHealth initiatives should focus on the emerging burden of non-communicable diseases, malnutrition, mental health and reproductive health and others to boost the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals. • Further effort should focus on friendly and cost-effectiveness mobile applications and user training to overcome encountered challenges 6/7 7th East African Health & Scientific Conference (EAHSC 2019)
