  5. Flips a figure across a line to make a mirror image Reflection means flip! Tell your neighbor! It’s like looking in a mirror!! Let’s Move!! Reflection

  6. Rotation means turning around a center Rotation means turn! Tell your neighbor! Let’s Move!! Rotation

  7. Yesterday we talked about transformations. Today we are going to talk about how shapes can be rotated, translated, and reflected to make tessellations.

  8. I will use transformations to create tessellations. Get out your math notebook.

  9. Tessellation A tessellation is formed by repeating figures that fit together without gaps or overlaps. In a tessellation, figures can be translated, rotated, or reflected.

  10. A tessellation can be made using transformations. What transformations occur in this tessellation? Watch me make a tessellation!

  11. What things can you think of that make tessellations?

  12. Directions: You will get with your partner. • Take green, red, yellow crayons. • Each group will get a set of shapes. You are going to make your own tessellation. • Trace one shape on your paper in the corresponding color like this. • Choose a 2nd block that will fit next to the 1st with no gaps or overlaps and trace it. • Then do the 3rd. Extend the pattern to make a tessellation. • Answer questions. Activity: You Try!
