What is evidence? • You are not an expert. • Expert = a person/group that conducts research • Has a “degree” in that field • Example: • Expert: Aaron Pooley • Field: Applied Linguistics • Education: Postgraduate (USA, Australia) • Provide evidence: • Linguistics: YES • Math: NO • MUSIC: NO • MEDICINE: NO

  3. Experts… • Give your opinion credibility • Credibility = evidence & support • You admit: “I am not an expert, but this • doctor/professor/engineer/government worker said…” • NO credibility = Bad essay • YES credibility = Excellent essay

How to include “evidence” • Your paragraph: • Sentence 1 = Counter-argument • Sentence 2 = YOUR argument • Sentence 3 = Example #1 • Sentence 4 = Example #2 • Sentence 5 = Example #3 • Sentence 6, 7 = EVIDENCE • Sentence 8 = Concluding sentence • DONE! • Start next paragraph using this format.

  5. Start your sentences with: • Research suggests that… • Dr. J. B. Sohnsaid that… • According to Professor Aaron Pooley… • The Plastic Surgery Organization of Korea said… • The Korea Times reported that…

  6. Your turn. • Look at your articles. • Highlight the most important information that supports your argument. • Write this information in YOUR OWN WORDS • Add to outline OR paragraph
